The last two times that our Granddaughter Courtney has stayed with us she has needed this medication to soothe her stomach aches.
Pepto-Bismol has a wintergreen taste to it and she seems to like it.
Well as much as you can like medication. I guess I should say that she can tolerate it.
She thinks that it is a miracle cure and asks for it. We always have
a bottle of it on hand.
Courtney gets stomach aches from overindulging in candy and junk food.
She is not a big eater but she has a terrible sweet tooth and cannot
pass up a piece of candy.
My mother use to give me Pepto-Bismol and I gave it to my children. Now
we are giving it to our grandchildren. Why? because it works. It coats the stomach and helps with indigestion,nausea , diarrhea and heartburn.
Now Pepto-Bismol comes in Maximum and Regular strength liquid as well as chewable tablets that are cherry tasting or the original wintergreen flavor.
Pepto Bismol comes in a plastic bottle with a child proof cap on it.
This was a little tricky for me at first . You have to squeeze the two tabs on the side and then turn the cap counter clockwise to get it off. This is a good feature for children that are likely to get into medication. This makes it impossible for a little child to get off.
Pepto Bismol also comes with a dosage cup sot you can pour the medication
into the little plastic cup and then give it to the child. This way they
get the correct dosage.
It always seems to work fast enough with Courtney, within a half hour
she is ready to sample something else if you let her.
Some of the things that I do not like about Pepto Bismol are:
The writing is so small on the bottle, I cannot read what the active
ingredients are This could be very dangerous if people take it that have
allergies to certain things. Some of them I am listing below.
Pepto-Bismol should not be given to children that have flu type symptoms , are running a fever, or have childhood illnesses such as chicken pox.
The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol is Bismuth subsalicylate. If you
have any type of allergies you should consult your doctor before taking
this. Never give it to a child that has diarrhea without first consulting
the doctor. Pepto-Bismol can cause severe constipation in children. .
If you have allergic reactions to Oil Of Wintergreen , or any of the
following :
Carprofen (e.g., Rimadyl), Diclofenac (e.g., Voltaren), Diflunisal (e.g.,
Dolobid), Fenoprofen (e.g., Nalfon), Floctafenine (e.g., Idarac),
Flurbiprofen taken by mouth (e.g., Ansaid), Ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin),
Indomethacin (e.g., Indocin), Ketoprofen (e.g., Orudis), Ketorolac (e.g.,
Toradol) Meclofenamate (e.g., Meclomen), Mefenamic acid,Naproxen (e.g., Naprosyn), Oxyphenbutazone (e.g., Tandearil), Phenylbutazone
(e.g., Butazolidin). And this is just a partial list. If you are taking
any of these or have any allergies at all a doctor should be asked before
taking this. Also if you are taking any over the counter medication the
doctor should be consulted before this is taken. This is the other thing
that I do not like about Pepto-Bismol, there are so many warnings that
should come with it and they do not .
It looks like my list of what I do not like about it numbers my list
of what I do. That is because there are so many things allergic reactions
that can happen with this.
I would never give it to a child without first talking to the doctor,
for anything other then a simple stomachache from over indulgence.
I guess the safest thing to do is always call the doctor if you have
any questions before you give your child any kind of medication.
I like this product and I would highly recommend it to have on hand for children with simple stomach aches. Adults can take it for the other things that it cures.
