Like a mountain goat...

Written: Aug 06 '06
Pros:Light, stable, easy to use.
Cons:Don't expect to go fast.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this product because it is fun, reliable and very economical.

Not the fastest, but very stable and reliable. I launch from the South River(in Maryland) and regularly go into the Bay looking for shoals to ride breaking boat wakes.
In six years my fuel cost has been $0. HA!

Make no mistake, it's a wet ride. Since I only go out in the summer when the water temps are warm, this is not a problem (actually it's really nice).

Modifications:
1)Installed a rod holder on the rear portion of kayak. Rod is out of paddle range.

2)Don't laugh. I went out and got a couple of kids inflatable balls (about 20"-30" round?). I jammed one ball in front of foot rests in the front and jammed the other behind the seat in the cockpit. The balls fill up the "dead spaces" and serve two functions. The first function is to displace excess water in the cockpit. The second is to provide extra buoyancy in a capsize situation. I've tested this and trust me it works!

3)Again don't laugh. I bought one of those kids foam "water noodles" , cut it to size, and centered it on the two piece paddle. As a result the paddle always floats and is very visible.

These modifications were done because on each trip I make the assumption that unexpected bad things are going to happen (capsizing, sudden storm, drunken power boaters, you name it). As a result I try to make sure that everything is tied to the kayak, and that everything will float. So far I've never had any problems.

I've abused this kayak repeatedly (I'm looking for an excuse to buy another one), but it just won't not die.
