| mmcphee's Full Review: Pelican Nintendo DS Lite Nerf Armor - blue/white (... |
My six year old daughter recently received a beautiful rose colored DS Lite, so now we are buying all of the necessary stuff to go along with it. One of my first add-on purchases was a light blue Nerf Armor protective cover.
What You Get
The Nerf Armor is a plastic soft hinged case, surrounded by a soft foam rubber. The DS Lite snaps securely into the plastic case. There are openings in the case to allow access to all of the ports and controls. The dual screens are completely exposed as are the face controls for ease of play.
Our Experience
Nerf Armor was an excellent purchase. While I am sure you can still cause damage to your DS if you aren’t careful, the Nerf foam will absorb the normal day-to-day bumps and accidental slips from the car seats and couch.
All of the openings are well designed. They are angled to allow even larger adult fingers to reach the power buttons, charging port and game slots. The only one I have trouble getting at is the volume slide control, but I use the stylus to adjust the volume. My kids however, have no trouble moving the volume control with their fingers.
Personally, I find the DS Lite much more comfortable to hold and play with the Nerf Armor on. The texture on the case makes it less slippery in my hands and the added thickness makes it fit better in my hands. Yet, the case does not make the system too large or bulky for my kids to comfortably handle.
The Nerf Armor cover is difficult to remove. Whether that is a plus or minus probably depends on your use. For me, I am glad that my kids can’t take itthem off and I don’t really see a need to take them off. To remove it, just to see if I could, I had to pry the top off at the hinges and then pop the bottom off by pushing on the DS at the stylus opening. It did make me confident that the case isn’t going to pop off on its own.
One thing I do not like is that there is no additional storage for accessories or games. Also, once the Nerf Armor is one you can’t use many of the other carrying case; the DS Lite won’t fit. I ended up purchasing a generic small zippered bag to hold the DS Lite, Power Cord and game case. My daughter was also disappointed that this case style is not available in pink, like her DS Lite, but the blue does look nice against the pink.
Final Thoughts
Nerf Armor is a great way to protect your DS Lite. However it does not provide extra storage for any accessories and can be hard to remove. For my kids, I don’t think I could buy a better protective case for our DS Lite.
