Pros:Inexpensive, good pressure rating, slow ware
Cons:handles poorly, poor grade rubber
The Bottom Line: Not a bad discount tire. I plan on using it on my trainer this winter, because they wear so slowly.
This is the first year I bought Performance Forte Pro Road Tires. I saw they were on sale for about half the cost of my usual tires so I figured I could afford the test. I bought two tires and I immediately noticed the rubber wasnt an especially good grade. It feels more like a hard plastic than tire rubber. This means the tire lasts longer, but it doesnt handle very well. I used these tires on some mountain roads in Colorado and I thought I was going to lose control on every switchback.

Of course I bought two of these and one of them has lasted me more than 4000 miles. I recently noticed its starting to show signs of too much wear (small holes on the exterior of the tire). The other tire gave me problems from the get go. I got more flats with it than any other tire Ive ridden with. Eventually I became convinced there was a small piece of glass or metal imbedded in the tire that was piercing my tubes. I closely examined the tire but never found the problem. I had to throw it out with only 500 miles on it. I dont know if this is a common problem with their tires but Ive never had repeated flats from a tire that where I couldnt find a piece of glass imbedded in the rubber.
The Performance Forte Pro Road Tires can also be purchased with a Kevlar bead. On the one hand this can help prevent punctures but on the other hand it makes the tire extremely difficult to put on the wheel. I noticed I didnt have much of a problem the second time I put the tire on the wheel (probably because the rubber had stretched somewhat). With the Kevlar bead, the factory specs say you can inflate the tires to 125psi, which is pretty good for preventing pinch flats.
If you keep your eye on Performace Bicycle, you can generally still get these for around $25.
