| aquanaut's Full Review: Performax 16-32 Plus Drum Sander |
After 40 years of small to medium woodworking projects I've accumulated a pretty good collection of tools. I'm now building a set of Cherry Cabinets and I absolutely dreaded the Raised Panels for the doors. The thought of gluing up and then truing up 32 panels made me sick at my stomach. I thought about out-sourcing the sanding of the panels to a shop with a wide belt sander. I couldn't find someone willing to do it for less than an arm and a leg so I started truing them up the old way, with a belt sander and a random orbital. It took me 7 hours to do 5 panels and I wasn't happy at all with the results. I started researching sanders and kept ending up at the Performax 16-32. I found the best deal I could get and bit the bullet. After a couple hours of setting it up and playing with it, I started sanding panels and drawer fronts. I sanded 32 Door panels and 23 Drawer heads in about 10 hours with the Performax. All to consistant thickness, flat and true. I then ran all the stock for the Stiles and Rails in a few hours.
I've bought a lot of machinery and tools over the years and I can't think of one that I will use more or like better than this sander. I'm not the type of person who usually writes a review about anything, but I'm not usually this impressed with anything. If you're considering buying one of these sanders, quit thinking about it. It'll be some of the best money you can spend in a wood shop.
