| chrisbickel's Full Review: Pertussin DM Adult Cough Suppressant |
At only $3.75 for a 4 ounce bottle, this is the best deal going on any cough remedy containing DEXTROMETHORPHAN. This drug found in similar cough remedies (ROBOTUSSIN being the most well known) shuts down the part of the brain that controls the cough reflex. Unlike many other remedies on the market, PERTUSSIN contains only the active ingredient and no other additives to control aches or fever. If you are suffering from only a cough and have no need to cure a headache, then PERTUSSIN is an excellent choice. It will not clutter your system with extraneous chemicals that your body does not need.
This is also helpful if you are planning on drinking the entire bottle. The extra chemicals intended to reduce pains and fever (medications that include nasal decongestants, antihistamines, acetaminophen, or guaifenesin) often can induce nausea in larger doses (not that Dextromethorphan doesn't induce a bit of nausea on its own in large doses).
Why would you want to drink the entire bottle?
Well... you really probably don't.
You're not really supposed to... and I wouldn't actually suggest it.
But...
Dextromethorphan (decks-tro-meth-OR-fan), or DXM, has been used recreationally for at least 30 years, without much harm or publicity. Although chemically related to opiates, its effects are closest to ketamine's. In addition to suppressing coughs, DXM is used medically for diagnostic purposes, and may be useful for a variety of conditions from seizures to heroin addiction. In the brain, DXM blocks the dopamine reuptake site, activates the sigma receptor, and blocks the open NMDA channel. Occasional recreational use of DXM is probably safe, though side effects and risks have been noted (I hereby tell you not to use any recreational drug including DXM). Unlike PERTUSSIN, many cough medicines contain ingredients other than DXM; some, like acetaminophen (paracetamol) can be fatal when an overdose is taken. Preparations like Robitussin DMTM contain guaifenesin and may cause vomiting.
DXM's effects are that of an intoxication accompanied by altered states of mind (depending on the amount ingested). DXM can alter the thought processes, leading to highly abnormal, psychosis-like mental states. It is possible that DXM, via sigma activation (an extremely high dose), may induce a mental state similar to that of schizophrenia. Whether or not this is fun to you is, of course, up to you. Higher doses of the drug (possibly an entire bottle of PERTUSSIN depending on your body weight) will produce dissasociative mental states not unlike KETAMINE (although some have described MDA type experiences). Many users have described an enhanced sense of creative abilities, as well as enhanced sensory activities. Music sounds better, and the sense of smell is so enhanced that certain smells can become overpowering.
DXM's effect on motor skills is drastic, and will turn you into a retard. Don't drive a car after taking any amount dosage of PERTUSSIN!
Why am I telling you all of this?
Well... I'm interested in information, and I'm interested in the reasons why certain drugs are legal and others are not. DXM continues to stay on the market because the pharmaceutical companies cannot find a drug that shuts down the cough reflex as well as DXM... they also make a lot of money off of this drug. The pharmaceutical companies are such a strong lobby that anything they get rich off of is bound to stay legal despite the fact that there are kids out there abusing the substance.
Now that I've said all that... let me say this... DXM can be quite interesting, but it can also make you sick to your stomach, and scare the hell out of you. Most folks don't like to do drugs that scare the hell out of them, therefore DXM will probably never become a chronically abused substance. Also, drinking these syrups is absolutely nasty! (The preferred method of ingestion is pure powder ordered from a chemical supply house... though syrups like PERTUSSIN usually are the cheapest most readily available source). Some folks do, however, enjoy the experience (which has been described by some as being likened to ASTRAL PROJECTION). I don't wish to suggest that anyone exceed the indicated dosage on the bottle.
What should you do now?
Don't abuse PERTUSSIN syrup. Doing so may get you in trouble, make you sick, or cause you to break the law (by ignoring directions indicated on the bottle). This article has been written for information purposes only.
As far as cough syrups go, PERTUSSIN is as good as ROBOTUSSIN and much cheaper. If I had a cough, I'd buy this junk.
