| djgeiger's Full Review: PetSafe Pet Screen Dor |
My experience with dog and cat doors is that their too noisy and difficult to install. I had given up trying to use them until now. I found that I REALLY needed one. We added on a nice, screened in garden porch to our home. It's much nicer to work on the garden porch amongst the fountains and plants. The cats aren't to happy that we get so carried away in our work that we don't have time to let them in and out of the porch. If they are on the porch with us they want back into the main house. If they are in the main house, they of course want back on the porch. The cats aren't pleased about this closed door policy at all! The only solution we have come up with is installing a pet door.
The question is, has any progress been made in the manufacturing of pet doors? We checked out several pet stores and found nothing innovative or different. I sorted through various websites and came up with a very good solution. We didn't even have to cut a hole in our wood door. The PetSafe Pet Screen Door locks right into your existing screen door.
Installation was so easy. The installation manual is very simple to follow. Lay the door or window on a hard flat surface, outside up. Separate the two parts of the PetSafe Pet Screen Door and make sure it is in the locked position. Place the frame under the screen with the groves up in the place where you want to install the door. You'll see three channels. Depending if it's a metal or fiber glass screen? If it's a fiberglass screen use a sharp knife and cut around the nearest channel to the door frame. If it's a metal screen use a sharp knife and cut through the second channel all the way around. The outer frame is placed on top and tapped into place with a hammer. Remove the screen you have cut away and replace the door or window. That simple, it's done!
The opening size is 8' by 10" recommended for pets under 30 lbs. For pets over 30 lbs. check out the OpenDor Screen. The PetSafe Pet Screen Door is rust resistant. It is also very durable and I think it will outlast the screen door that it is attached to! Ceramic magnets make sure the flap always closes behind your pet. The panel has locks when you don't want your pet going out. This sensational little gizmo can fit into a screen window too.
The Borwick Website is easy to navigate and has a secure shopping system. Website URL: http://www.petscreendoor.com/index.html Or, if you prefer you can phone in a order at 805-967-9469, 800-365-5657. Contact email is ewinters@silcom.com. Borwick has outstanding response time to questions. Eleanor Winters, President of Borwick, responded personally and in record time. The turn around on orders is very quick and the customer service has been absolutely outstanding. The price ordering it from the website was $25.95 plus $5.00 postage and handling. They offer a 100% guarantee. The product has been manufactured in Santa Barbara CA for the last 20 years.
Another product we had considered purchasing was the Pet Mate 4 Way Locking Cat Flap. This product is designed to fit into a wood door. We just can't justify cutting a hole in a nice wood door. The vinyl flap gets dingy looking, quickly. Cutting into a wood door requires the use of jigsaws, screwdrivers, files, all in all, just a bunch of hassle.
The only thing that could have been a problem, the Petdoor was only available in one color, though it comes in two colors. We could only get this product in bronze. It also comes in silver, but isn't available at this time.
It didn't take long a all for the two cats to adjust to using the new PetSafe Pet Screen Door. Micky, the 6 month old kitten used it right after we showed it to him. Molly, a little over a year old, is much more leery. We showed it to her, then placed her treat on the other side of door from where she was. After Micky went running through after the treat she decided the whole idea wasn't so bad after all and went jumping through after her treat before Micky ate the whole thing!
The porch idea was a Godsend to us. We love living in the country, being in the city has been very difficult on us. We have set up our office on the porch, now we are surrounded by the smell of flowers and the sounds of the fountain's trickling water. It's a great place for the cats to play and to cat nap. The door is working out great. No more up and down and in and out! Best yet, no Creak! Slam, Whap, Whap! It's very silent!
