Did not work for very long
Written: Feb 27 '01 (Updated Mar 07 '01)
Pros:Appearance, price (as compared to building a fence)
Cons:A determined dog will endure the pain and escape
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this system if you have a stubborn or smart dog, or if you are not willing to spend a lot of time on the training process.
We bought this system to contain our dog, Chico, who is a Rottweiler/Beagle cross (really - he's actually kind of cute). We installed it when he was six months old, and I spent a lot of time training him. That first summer, it was wonderful. Chico stayed within the boundary, and we were able to have fun with him outdoors, playing fetch without a leash getting in the way.
Once Chico was older and wiser, he learned that the pain in his neck was short-lived, and that if he ran fast enough, he could burst across the boundary and get away. When I saw him doing this, I tested the fence, then trained him again. The problem with the training was that he always did exactly what he was supposed to do while we were watching. But as soon as we let him out of our sight he would head to an area by the garden where he could get the maximum take-off distance, then charge toward the opposite side of the lawn, where he would break through at amazing speed. We even bought a stronger shock collar, but the only difference it made was that he yelped as he passed through the boundary.
So now Chico is back to being tied up, and we have two expensive shock collars in a drawer.
Even though this product did not work on Chico (and I blame the beagle in him for this), I think that it would work on the type of dog who has a sensitive disposition. You know, the kind of dog who hates to even hear a harsh word from you. However, perhaps a dog with this temperament would be completely terrorized by this system.
