djgeiger's Full Review: Petag Kmr Milk Replacer for Kittens Liquid 8 Fluid...
I really did purchase the Petag Kmr Milk Replacer for Kittens Liquid 8 Fluid oz container, once. Well, actually twice since we had to go back and buy the rest of the Petag Kmr Milk Replacer. We had a mobile home for a short while when my husband George and I were taking care of my folks. There was a highly unusual, heavy rain in the middle of the summer. My daughter happened to look outside and she saw a mother cat dragging a drenched kitten out from under our mobile home. If there was still more kittens under the mobile home, they would be dead in minutes; the rain was coming down hard and fast. We recruited the leanest member of the family which was George's son to go under the trailer to see if there were more kittens. He came back out with three. One was in serious shape.
The poor little thing had a broken leg, and slashes across his face; the kittens had been stuffed behind a bunch of metal. Evidently, when the mother was trying to save the kittens from the flood, she pulled on the injured kitten, but couldn't get it out of the entangling mess. The kittens were in water but it hadn't covered them yet.
Where the mother had the kittens was mounded up with dirt, it was like a flooded island, and that kittens would have been covered in a minute or so, by the time my stepson had stuck the kittens in his shirt they would of already been drowned. On his way out, he discovered one that had already drowned. Evidently, it had followed the scent of the mother and crawled then fell off the island trying to follow her. None of the kittens had their eyes opened yet. They were at best, maybe a week old. It breaks my heart to this day knowing how these babies suffered.
We dried them, got the injured kitten to the veterinarian, and tried to find a source of KMR locally. I had left my wildlife rehabilitation supplies states away and had nothing but a first aid kit in the house.
I had noticed that the veterinarian clinic had Petag Kmr Milk Replacer for Kittens Liquid 8 Fluid oz, I grabbed one of those. Plus a couple of kitten bottle kits. I went back home to take care of the surviving kittens. While George went to the feed supplies to find Petag Kmr Milk Replacer in larger containers. He had no success, not where we lived.
We put a call in to have the larger powder KMR delivered. In the meantime, we would have to make do. I had my husband go back to the veterinarian's office to buy the rest of the Petag Kmr Milk Replacer for Kittens Liquid 8 Fluid oz. We paid over $10 each for the 8 ounce KMR readymade. You can't expect much better at a veterinarian's office, besides I would have spent $40, it was the only source in town. If nothing else, though expensive, the ready to feed liquid is handy. While the powder isn't difficult to mix, it can be a pain. We normally bought the 1:2. 5 lb. bucket size.
Once opened the rest of the KMR Milk Replacer can be refrigerated for 24 hours. Then it has to be thrown away. Whatever is left in the bottle, after the kitten suckles, needs to be thrown away immediately so don't overfill the bottle, once you know how much you will need (the stuff is liquid gold).
If the liquid milk replacer has been in the refrigerator it should be warmed to room temperature. Don't use the microwave to heat the milk. Bubbles of very hot liquid could be hidden, and not even shaking it may find them all. Just fill the bottle and run the facet over the bottle. This tiny of a bottle it takes about a minute.
I had quite a bin stored with bottles from the tiny kitten/squirrel bottles to calf size bottles. The bottles and nipples were stored in individual bins according to the size of the bottle, well marked, so that you can find them quickly. Unfortunately, my bin was in another state.
The kittens should be fed two tablespoons per four oz. of body weight daily. Divide this into equal feedings through a 24-hour period. You should have a scale to weight the little ones daily to make sure they are making good weight gains.
KMR can be used for a variety of animals, kittens, gerbils, badgers, and raccoons. Animals like puppies, opossums, skunks, and squirrels would need different replacement milk, made by the same company, and it is Esbilac Milk ReplacerbyPetAg. I have used this on every animal except for puppies; don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but thankfully, never had one go poorly on me.
The whole idea behind the milk replacer is obviously to replace the mother's milk. If at all possible, if there is a problem at birth, make sure the babies get the mother's milk for the valuable properties of the mother's milk colostrums. It also delivers the immunities but it isn't the milk that has the immunities in it. It contains something as small as a molecule that transfers the mother's entire immunity system over to the baby. Any milk cells that contained live anything would be killed by the digestive system, but not this little molecule. It happens virtually overnight.
The fact that Petag was able to reproduce a digestible protein for animal infants has saved millions of animals. It also comes quite close to the mother's milk, in fat, and carbohydrates. If you look to the left at my picture, you will see a few cling-ons called raccoons that had been raised from birth on KMR and they are quite healthy. We added solid food as soon as we could for additional nutrients and proteins.
The ingredients are here simply because of comparison interest between the KMR for kittens and Esbilac for puppies.
KMR Milk Replacer Ingredients: (kitten, gerbils, raccoons, and badgers)
KMR and Esbilac are both prepared under food processing specifications and, unlike some pet foods, use food grade on all ingredients. Evidently catlike critters need more protein than puppy like critters.
When we ordered the KMR powder we also ordered a couple more cans (larger though) of the KMR readymade so that we could make a gradual change from the ready made to the powder mix. We didn't want to harm their delicate digestive systems. You can make the change with no problem as long as you make it a gradual change. If there is no difference in the readymade to the mixed powder formula there is at least going to be a difference in the water.
None of the kittens developed diarrhea when switched from their mother's milk to the Petag KMR Milk Replacer for Kittens Liquid 8 Fluid oz. They also had no adverse effect when we make the ready make to the powder mix change.
We hadn't lived in the mobile home park very long when this had happened. This is also when we observed that there was a huge feral cat population in the park; as well as the town. Now we had a new cause, a new purpose to our lives.
Our next objective after we got the kittens warm, dried, and fed, was to find the other kitten, or kittens the mother had moved. We kept a watch out until we spotted the mother cat. We watched her leave the mobile home park through a hole in the cyclone fence right across from us. On the other side of the cyclone fence was a field with a storage unit company. Sure enough, that's where the kittens were. We recovered two more in our covert operations. It felt like it with all the sneaking around we were doing. Pets? What pets?
We were able to raise all the kittens on KMR. The best part they were away from the feral population. The remaining kittens all got fat and sassy (except for the injured one).
My daughter had a huge roll in taking care of the kittens. I worked for a newspaper and worked pretty long hours at times. When we first brought in the kittens we fed them every couple of hours for the first two days and then switched them to every three hours.
My daughter got very attached to one of the kittens. I named the little monster Damien. She named him Precious, so his name became Precious Damien. I doubted if you have guessed this, she kept Precious Damien.
We got all the kittens spayed and neutered and found homes for them. We got the veterinarian paid, that took care of the injured kitten. The kitten was so tiny and injured so severely the vet didn't think there was anything she could do to save the kitten. She treated her the best she could. We brought her home and kept her warm and comfortable, hoping but knowing, that she wouldn't make it. That little sweet darling died in my daughter's hands.
Precious Damien grew up to be a cat like no other. We discovered what a special cat he was when we brought the cats a bunch of soft rubber balls. My daughter threw one to Precious he not only ran after it, but also retrieved the ball and brought it back to her. It wasn't a mistake; he played fetch with all members of the household the rest of his life. Except, for a couple of times, he gave us a look, like you got to be kidding I'm tired.
This review is written in memory of Precious, who died two years later during a recovery period after surgery. The veterinarian suspected that he had a bad heart associated with inbreeding that often happens within a feral population. We were able to save close to 100 feral kittens during that few year period of time. Each kitten we had spayed or neutered, and found each one a good home.
Look at my profile picture to the left, these raccoons were all raised on KMR; they are fat, happy, comfortable, and best of all healthy. Nothing else comes close to KMR.
