| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Pete's Oktoberfest |
To the seasoned beer lover, the fall season is greeted with open arms. Why, you ask? Because it is during this time that Oktoberfest festivals are held around the world, including the largest one of them all, held in Munich, Germany. Also, during this festive season, many beer companies produce their seasonal Oktoberfest- style beer.
Basic Characteristics:
Pete's Oktoberfest is a typical Marzen- style beer. It has a reddish- brown color, the smell of sweet malt, and a medium body. The foaminess is pretty good. The ingredients used in this beer include Caramel malt, Munich malt, and pale malt; along with Yakima Cluster, Tettnang, and Cascade hops. The alcohol level in this beer is 5.6 percent by volume.
The dominant taste in this beer is the caramel malt. The initial sip is sweet, with the taste of caramel covering your palate. Then, the finish is a little bit bitter, but not by very much. The bittering level of Pete's Oktoberfest is 22 International Bittering Units- a low enough level that the beer doesn't taste too bitter, but high enough that it does help to balance out the flavor of the sweet malt.
One bad thing about this beer is the aftertaste. Many beers do have an aftertaste, but it's more pleasant in some than others. I found the aftertaste of Pete's Oktoberfest to be leaning toward the unpleasant end of the spectrum. The aftertaste was malty and caramel- like, but not very good and not very fresh.
Food Compatibility:
This beer, like other Oktoberfest beers, would go best if served with white meat. I would suggest serving it with pork chops, turkey, or chicken. It would match up even better if the white meat included some spices and/or seasonings.
Final Thoughts:
Pete's Oktoberfest is a fairly good representative of this style of beer. I'm not really a fan of the Marzen style of beer, so my opinion might be a little biased. I just haven't found too many great Oktoberfest beers. Most of them, like Pete's, are good, but not great. They are not the type of beers that are good enough to persuade me to order a second glass.
I will always look forward to the autumn season, with all the great Oktoberfest celebrations that take place across America and around the world. But as far as seasonal beers go, I can be comforted in knowing that the winter season is just a few short months away. Oktoberfest- style beer just isn't one of my favorites.
