What happened to the fifth star? (Reply to this comment)

Less than a perfect rating, for shame, for shame. Luger's is as close to culinary heaven as I've experienced (my own review may betray my bias) -- I get back to NYC about twice a year, and ensure at least one of those trips to include a trip to Luger's. I'll be there this July!

Great review...I'm dreaming of creamed spinach and hash browns...

Ah, wise Teresa - I had a feeling you would agree with me. ;)

Jamón serrano - I remember the taste well. Tried it for the first time when I traveled to Madrid a couple of years ago. Absolutely delicious! Especially with a plate of olives, some crusty bread and local cheeses. If you like jamón serrano though, you must try jamón iberico - which is also aged and cured, but the pork is derived from a special breed of pigs who live in Extramadura and dine exclusively on acorns from cork trees. Unfortunately, as far as I know, jamón iberico is not for sale in the States due to strict import regulations. Also, it is in such demand in Europe that there probably would not be enough to ship to the States as the production of this ham is rather limited. I can't believe I did not try to smuggle some back with me. Let's make a deal, shall we - whoever goes to Spain first must bring back some jamón iberico for the other person.

Epicure :)

p.s. I asked Peter Luger's how long they aged their beef, and they said it was a secret.

No, they know the really well-off folks are the ones who can get the prime-time dining reservations, so they leave the 4:45 and 10:15 crowds alone. No point wasting their energies on such slim pickins if you know what I mean. Thanks for reminding me of that important safety point - perhaps I should add it to my review. Nah, if people don't take the time to read my comments, they don't deserve to know. Don't you agree?

Clearly we have not explored Williamsburg enough. Based upon your comment, it sounds like we should take an afternoon just to walk around the area. Most of our trips to Williamsburg were made late at night when we had but one thought in our mind - where's the beef? There certainly has been a lot of development in that area lately. When you were living there, what were some of your favorite places to dine and visit?

Thank you for enlightening me. And all this time I thought I had witnessed a true miracle. Little did I know that you were behind it all. I bet you staged the entire thing. I can definitely see you trying to push the buttons of a crusty old waiter just for the fun of it. But how sad - you missed out on a killer steak. Perhaps next time you will decide to curb your Slouchievous impulses and behave yourself.

Oh, he'll be back....for the steak more than anything else. I think when he was making his list of pros and cons of living in New York, the one pro of Peter Luger's outweighed ten cons. Glad we were able to get together Friday night even though we missed you on Thursday.

Quel horreur (Reply to this comment)

I hope all the muggers in Brooklyn are not now headed there for the 4:45 and 10:15 crowds.

When we lived in Brooklyn we ate Peter Luger's a couple of times, and found it just as you describe.

On top of that, the trip to and through Williamsburg is of immense interest....a veritable cacophony of ethnic and religious lifestyles centered around a huge Hassidic Jewish population makes any run through the neighborhood a feast for the eyes and the ears....worthy companion experiences to the ultimate steak.

Good post.

So . . . (Reply to this comment)

I said, "Could I see a menu?"

And the waiter said, "No steak for you."

And Mrs. Sloucho said, "Where do you get your salmon?"

And he laughed and said, "No steak for you, too!"

And our companion said, "Which goes better with the salmon, the tomatoes and onions or the spinach?"

And he said, "No steak for three!"

They kicked us out then and there. That's why the table was ready for you.

Excellent writing; fun review.

So we can go to Luger's again.

There is no such thing as an opportune dental emergency. If I'd not had that 9am dental appointment....

Yeah, I'm not a big steak person either, but some places are worth going to just for the experience. Plus, my brother would have a heart attack if I forgot to make the necessary arrangements each time he visits me. One other funny thing - there is a huge Peter Luger's billboard just to the right of the restaurant, which is a bit out of place because there is virtually nothing except run-down industrial buildings in that area. Like I said, no ego problem there.

Oh, how absolutely awful for you! And how terrible for your colleague to be teasing you with steak descriptions when it was not certain that you would be able to experience Peter Luger's first-hand. Are you still speaking to this person?

Believe it or not, Peter Luger's has mail order, but I'm not sure that would be the same thing. You will simply have to schedule another trip -no two ways about it.

I'm going to have to visit Joe's one of these days. You know how much I love crab and key lime pie - much more than steak in fact! Joe's sounds like it has a history to match Peter Luger's, and just as many celebrity visitors too. I wish we had one near us.

We went to Joes Stone crab last night and had the crabs, creamed spinach and key lime pie...sounds like the review I wrote in your write-off. LOL Didn't even look at the menus.
