| chic_seeker's Full Review: Peter Luger Steak House |
What Intrigued Me about Peter Luger's:
NY has many landmark steakhouses. Although Peter Luger cannot be considered a Manhattan institution on account of it being a stone throw away in Brooklyn, it has served the likes of royalty, politicians, pop stars and the unwashed masses such as yours truly.
The restaurant is so famous, Rachel in "Friends" mentioned its number being on her cell phone in one of its episodes! Peter Luger is a part of the pop culture lexicon.
The Good:
Peter Luger is known for its porterhouse steak, medium rare for two. At $83.90 for 32-36 oz, that piece of dry-aged meat is very expensive but oh so good!
Another delight available at Peter Luger's is their BACON $2.90/piece. Get each person in your party a piece each else you will ruin many a friendship when you guys all dig in simultaneously.
If you want a tasty yet cheaper alternative, please read below. I definitely have a soft spot for their hamburgers @ less than $10 bucks each! Cheese, fries and bacon cost extra.
The Bad:
The decor is very normal. Nothing to write home about or to be featured on the front page of "Architectural Digest." I still like it and think it is quaint though. But that is the type of person I am, I like old things.
The sides are interesting in the "it rounds out a meal" type of way. Once again, the creamed spinach is nothing to write home about. If you never had sliced onions and tomatoes drizzled with Peter Luger sauce, try it. Their sauce is a stickier, sweeter version of cocktail sauce. Desserts are okay, but I think it is only because I always have a soft spot for dessert so to me, I see no evil in mediocre desserts.
What Most People Do Not Realize is that Peter Luger Steakhouse Sauce is NOT steak sauce. It is good with food you prepare at home but if you ask any self-proclaimed steak expert, they will gasp in horror if you douse your perfectly amazing porterhouse steak with the sauce.
Psst, this sauce is extra good when it's on your extra juicy Peter Luger burger, available only for lunch until 3pm.
***The Tasty Cheaper Alternative:***
Not many people know about Peter Luger's lunch menu. Yes, they are open for lunch! The secret to affordable dining at Peter Luger's is to partake on its lunch special. The beef used for its hamburger is the same meat, ground up!
I love exquisite meals but I hate spending hundreds for it. I don't mind once in a while splurges but this is the burger that makes me feel special. :)
If you want to go with friends, for lunch, at these affordable prices, they won't mind if you became a cartoon character and stated, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today!"
Things to Keep In Mind at Peter Luger's:
1. Cash only, unless you apply for the Peter Luger credit card
2. Don't expect bend over backwards service- this is Brooklyn, chill and have fun though! My server was nice enough :)
3. Go for the experience, stay for the yummy lunch special (only until 3pm!)
In Summary:
Bring cash, hearty appetites, friends and GO! You'll be full and very happy.
