| Error44's Full Review: Peter Luger Steak House |
Peter Luger's Steakhouse has been winning the Zagat's Best Steakhouse of New York for so long (16 years running) that it's time to retire the award. It'll be like the Cy Young award in baseball: good candidates will win, but will never be as good as the original champ.
I went to Luger's with the family for a mid-afternoon lunch, four
of us males and a female, my mother. The wait was not long, given that we had a reservation three weeks in advance. Entering the restaurant, we immediately noticed the wood floors, walls, bar and tables, each adding a little rustic charm. The bar was bustling with people--young and old, each waiting to experience the best steak of their lives.
Once seated, the waiter quickly took our drink orders and handed out menus. Not much selection here, but why go to Luger's when not ordering steak? Two steaks for two and the fresh fish for mother, who is unable to eat red meat. The food was brought to us very quickly, barely after we were done with our appetizers of tomato-and-onion salad and shrimp cocktail. The waiter placed two plates full of sizzling, tender beef in front of us. Behold, the best steak we shall ever eat.
Sides were delicious and plenty. Hash browns were perfectly golden brown, not burned, and spinach was smooth and creamy. The Luger's steak sauce is a perfectly sweet and tangy and accompanies well both the steak and tomato-and-onion salad.
After hearing that the service was macho and unpleasant, we were pleased to find our waiter was decidedly personable and sharp, bringing us meals and drinks in short time and cordially explaining items on the menu. When my brother ordered a Budweiser, the server jovially slammed the mug down hard on the wood table, like in an old German bar; this is when I knew we were in a REAL steakhouse.
On to desserts. The Holy Cow hot fudge sundae is a marvel; ice cream is smooth and sweet, the fudge hot and chocolatey. My mother rather enjoyed her apple strudel, as my brother chowed down on what looked like a divine chocolate mousse. When all was said and done, we were dazed: so much food and so amazingly tasty. The bill was surprisingly low for 5 people and the waiter was deserving of his 50 dollar tip. We left stuffed and none of us ate dinner that night.
Go to Luger's. Experience it, savor it and wish you could eat every meal there.
