| sophiesdad's Full Review: Peticure Elite Nail Trimmers Clippers Dog |
In a separate review, I wrote about my experience with Pedipaws - the infamous cheap, "as seen on TV" product. I had ordered it despite my past experience with bargain items. My motto has always been to buy the best tool that I can afford.
In the end, I bought the Peticure Elite nail system. Basically, it's a Dremmel that is fitted with a special head that contains a sandpaper band and several different size holes depnding on the breed of your pet.
The most impressive thing about this product is the support on the website. There is a ton of information on training your pet to get ready for this type of nail trimming to make it a more pleasant experience and not one where you will have to chase your pet all around the house, putting it in a straight jacket with a muzzle!
The unit came very well-packed and the instruction booklet was chock-full of just about any information that you could possibly need. But, if it isn't enough, the website is a plethora of additional information.
The Dremmel-type handle is well constructed. It does by no means feel cheap or flimsy. It had the same quality as my bonafide Dremmel except this unit is cordless. It has a variable speed setting switch and a rechargeable battery. The battery life is excellent allowing several trims to be done before needing a recharge. The base is well constructed and has an indicator light when the battery is charging.
The head is large enough to contain the filings from one pet before you have to empty it. As I stated before, there are several different size holes depending on the breed of dog/cat that you have. As your pet becomes more comfortable, you can use a higher speed setting on the unit which gets the job done quicker.
The motor is relatively quiet which helps not to startle the pet. Trimming consists of a couple of smooth down/up swipes to each nail. On the website there are excellent picture examples of how to tell when you are nearing the quick. The quick is the part of the pet's nail that contains blood vessels and lots of nerve endings. The objective of any trimmer is to stay as far enough away from this quick so maintain your pet's comfort.
Once the job is done, cleaning is a snap - remove the cover to the nail guide and dump the filings into the trash.
So why buy this instead of just using a Dremmel and the filing band? True, you can attain the same results using the high speed tool that you have in your garage. However, the nail guide not only sizes and helps to keep the nail in place while filing, but also keeps any hair out of the way of being snagged by the filing band. This would be tremendously painful for your pet.
The Peticure is also quieter than the standard Dremmel. Finally, the Peticure is cordless so you can have your pet in an area that is most comfortable for both you and your pet. You may want to trim the nails outside so that your pet is distracted by the sights and smells of nature and your back yard. The Peticure can go anywhere you want to do the job. However, if you are insistent, they do sell just the trimming head that can be fitted to any existing Dremmel that you may already have. I feel that having the Peticure unit side-by-side with all of the other grooming products that I have for my pets will serve as a reminder as well as an incentive to get this job done.
To conclude, it is well worth the extra 30-40 dollars to buy this unit over any imitators. Compared to the Petipaws, the differences are night and day. As far as I know, Peticure was the FIRST of its type to reach the consumer market. Anything else is a cheap imitator. Let's face it - if you are marketing a knock-off for $19.99 (which includes your profit), you are going to have to sacrifice SOMETHING when trying to imitate a product that sells for $50 on the open market.
I feel that the extra money that I have spent for the Peticure Elite will ensure that this appliance will last me for many years of faithful service. I have ample support from their website with videos, pictures, and live customer service. The competetors have virtually nothing more than a place to order the product and replacement bands.
One final note: The Peticure Elite is for medium to large dogs. They also have a smaller, less expensive model, the Peticure Petite which is designed for small dogs and cats. If you're not sure which to buy, there are detailed descriptions on the website or a trained live staff that can answer your questions. For me, all of the above gives me every tool that I need to decide whether to buy the product as well as ample tools to keep me using it for many years with positive results.
