captainjmorgan's Full Review: Petlinks™ System Cheese Chaser® Cat Toy
The Petlinks System Cheese Chaser Cat Toy doesn't quite live up to the standard I had hoped. I have three cats (2 females, 1 male) and bought this cat toy to provide some entertainment for them. I found it at Petco for about $13.00 and was excited because it looked like something fun for both me and the cats to enjoy.
The package comes with a mouse that's soft and furry on the outside and about three inches long, not including the tail, along with a 4 x 4 x 4 inch plastic cheese wedge that serves as the controller. There are two little felt ears on top of the mouse, but no face. At one end is a two inch tail which seems to be a harder wire type material covered in a soft material. The bottom of the mouse looks like the underside of a toy car and is screwed to the plush mouse.
The cheese wedge has two control buttons that look like Ritz crackers. The button on the right controls the left/right movement of the front wheels and the button on the left controls the forward/backward movement of the back wheels. The wedge also has a collapsible 10 inch antenna that folds up nicely along the top for easy storage.
To charge the mouse, you simply connect the bottom of the mouse (facing left- there's a diagram on the cheese wedge to show you) to the top of the wedge and turn the on/off switch on the left hand side to on. A red light shows that the mouse is charging.
When you're ready to play with the mouse, disconnect it and set it on a flat surface. Make sure the cheese wedge is on. Pull out the antenna and start pressing buttons. In my experience, it will not work on any floors except hard floors with no debris.
Here lies the major flaw of this toy- any dust, thread, lint, hair, or fur that might seem too tiny or insignificant to affect this toy will! The first time I pulled it out of the package, I was impressed at the construction and quality. The tires even have a rubber tread for better traction. Unfortunately, as soon as I set it on my laminate flooring, it went for about two feet before it wouldn't go any more. I picked it up and turned it over to look at the wheels and saw that a small thread has wrapped around the back wheel axle. I took tweezers and removed the thread, swept the floor, and tried again. This time the mouse traveled for about three feet before getting stuck. Once again, I turned it over and fiddled with the wheels. I continued this pattern for about a half hour before I realized my cats had given up twenty minutes before that.
As neat as the concept and idea is, the wheels need some serious revision on this toy. I like the charging mechanism and the fact that it only takes 2 AA batteries. The charge doesn't last very long, but I haven't been able to test it completely because I can't get the mouse to run longer than a few seconds before the wheels freeze up. The construction seems pretty durable and my cats will paw at the mouse so it's tempting enough for them.
I wouldn't recommend spending the money on this particular remote control mouse. Your cat can get much more enjoyment out of a ten cent tinsel ball than this expensive toy.
