There is nothing worse than tripping over a cat who is following you around meowing because it just finished off the last of the food in it's bowl 10 minutes after you just filled it. It got really old. After complaining to each other for a couple of months about the issue, my husband and I decided to pick up the Petmate Le Bistro Feeder at PetSmart.
The Petmate Le Bistro Feeder is 12" tall, 11" deep and 6 1/2" wide, at it's widest points. It holds 5 pounds of dry food. The dish itself is a little over 2" deep and 5 1/2" across, plenty of space for your cats to share, if they are so inclined. Mine prefer to hiss and swat at each other, so this has never been something that would happen at my house, but I have heard of kitty housemates actually being friends.
The bowl of the Petmate Le Bistro Feeder is kind of an off white color and is made of heavy plastic. if you decide to use the Petmate Le Bistro Feeder for a small breed of dog, chewing of the bowl could be a problem.Due to it's size and shape, tipping it over would take some work!
The removable container that holds the food is clear, making it very easy to see the level of food inside. There are openings at both ends. The bottom, where the food loads into the bowl, is about 4 1/2" in diameter. The top, which is covered with a snap on, off white lid, is roughly 5" in diameter. When empty, it's large openings make it easy to clean. It's also easy to fill, since the lid removes from the top. You can leave the container on the base, so there is less chance of spills.
While the base of the Petmate Le Bistro Feeder is pretty sturdy and hard to knock over, the container on top could be toppled with enough force. It just sits in place. There is nothing, really, holding it into place. Since ours is kept out of reach of our son, and our dog, this hasn't been an issue with us. It's also not down on the floor where it could be kicked or tripped over. The bowl wouldn't tip, but the container could easily pop off.
My only real gripe is that sometimes the food doesn't want to slide into the bowl as it should. The slope in the inside of the dish sometimes gets jammed. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. Sometimes the food falls just fine, but every couple of days there is a back up and we have to give it a shake or go pawing thru the food, pulling it into the bowl to release the blockage.
All in all the Petmate Le Bistro Feeder was more than worth the price we paid for it. We have two cats and if we fill it up it lasts at least a week before it needs topped off again. And since we use dry food, moist has it's own bowl, the bowl seldom needs more than the dry food dust and crumbs dumped out of it for cleaning.
I would recommend the Petmate Le Bistro Feeder for anyone with one or more cats, or a small breed of dog. I have a Cocker Spaniel and it would probably work for her, but I wouldn't use it for any breed larger than that.
