Pros:Willl keep a puppy's interest, and they do enjoy sleeping with it.
Cons:Pricey.
The Bottom Line: The heartbeat sound does help to calm the puppy (or dog)
Petstages Heartbeat Pillow Toy
Yes, I bought this toy for my 5 month old PeekAPoo. Think of the movie Marley and Me and you'll know why I bought this toy along with many other Petstages products. I needed to calm down my puppy especially since she had learned to climb out of her pen.
While browsing through a pet store called Petals and Pets I only had to read the back of the package on the toy before they had me hooked.
The Heartbeat Pillow uses the sound of a heartbeat to calm and soothe an anxious puppy or dog. The plush pillow contains a heartbeat mechanism that can be removed for washing. The toy can then be tossed into the washing machine, washed in cold water, and tumble dry on a low setting.
When I read that this is a great way to reduce separation anxiety when you are away, again I was hooked!
How to use this toy?
You press the plush pillow to activate the heartbeat sound. And it does sound like a heartbeat. It even calmed me the first time I squeezed the toy.
And this soothing sounds did help to calm my puppy except unfortunately it did not completely erase her separation anxiety. No siree. I still need to work on that aspect of her puppyhood because it seems that my particular breed (a cross between a Pekinese and Miniature Poodle) separation anxiety is quite common in this type of dog.
The toy is made of a cozy fleece and plush pillow and it is great for them to cuddle with. She loves to put it into her bed and sleep with it.
You do have to be careful with this toy and make sure they don't chew on the heartbeat mechanism as this can result in harm to the pet. I know I've discovered that I need to check these chew toys that have either this type of mechanism inside, or those squeakers because the toy does wear out, and just last week I was able to pry out a plastic squeaker on another toy that could have resulted in her choking on it.
The Heartbeat Pillow is pricey at $15, but it is one of her favorite toys and I think will last a while, at least through her puppy phase and perhaps young adult phase as well.
