| gregfokker's Full Review: Petzl Dionysis C39 |
The Dionysis is a fully-padded and adjustable harness that boasts Petzl's uncompromising quality and comfort.
Configurability
The Dionysis sacrifices slightly heavier weight for full adjustability on the leg loops, belt and rear-elastic. Included on this harness are Petzl's single loop-buckles. Where on most belts the buckles require a double pass to lock down the webbing hooked through them, Petzl's are designed to cinch and stay fast on a single pass. This design not only saves time and energy in fastening buckles on the leg loops and waist belt, but also makes it easier to snug them "just right".
A breeze to slip on
The single pass buckles remain fastened at all times, and require only to be loosened in order to step into or out of the harness. This saves a great deal of time, obviating the need to re-thread the webbing everytime you pull it on. As well, it's a snap to adjust even single handed- just tug to tighten, pull back on the buckle to loosen.
The waist/hip belt and its canvas webbing are designed to mate with a velcro hook and fastener, to permit you to fasten the belt without fully committing when pulling it on. Don't forget to snug up the buckle once you've stepped in. Also included is a clip on the waist belt to secure the spare webbing once you're buckled in tight. Again, like the velcro, this contributes extra weight in favor of ease and convenience.
Plush comfort
The waist belt and leg loops are broad and well-padded, and even after hours of climbing and belaying, you won't mind having it on. The rear elastic loop stays have a quick release that I've never had to use.
There are the usual gear loops, slightly articulated to render them more accessible. Notably absent, however, is a rear loop. While many prefer a separate webbing or even a string for their chalk bag, a rear center loop would have been a nice touch as I usually clip my bag directly to the harness.
Bottom line
The Dionysis a plush, well-made and -designed harness that emphasizes comfort and convenience over weight. It fastens easily and securely and you'll love wearing it.
