Looking for a dependable, light and easy to wear headlamp?
The Petzl Tikka might just be the answer to your prayers if you are.
Coming in at only 70 grams with the batteries, the Petzl Tikka is one of the lightest and most comfortable headlamps out there. Not only that, using LED technology it is also one of the brightest that Ive ever seen.
I received this headlamp for Christmas two years ago and since then, its always been in my backpack and Ive had the opportunity to use it for some caving and for some hiking at night. The difference between the Petzl Tikka and a standard headlamp with a normal light is amazing.
This was best illustrated when I was showing my father and some of his friends a cave in the Catskills I had found when I was a forest ranger (photos are available at http://www.jeffandmoe.net/outdoors/westkill-11-2-02.html if youre interested in checking them out unfortunately the one shot of me wearing a headlamp is with my fathers older headlamp on I was looking at the difference). Back then it we used flashlights and standard headlamps. This time, I had the Petzl Tikka and as soon as I started descending into the cave, I noticed details that I had missed and I didnt have to worry about clunking it into the sides of the caves, or feel uncomfortable wearing a bulky and heavy headlamp.
Whereas standard incandescent headlamps can be bright, the Petzl Tikka is illuminating. You wouldnt think so with such a small package, but the LED technology, which provides three white LEDs in the lamp produce an intense and very white light. Incandescent headlamps often produce more and more yellow light as the batteries die down, which they do very quickly. Additionally, battery packs on other headlamps are either usually behind the lamp or on the back which add to the bulk and weight of the system since they generally use AA batteries.
The Petzl Tikka uses 3 AAA batteries (which are included when you purchase it) that are built into the light unit, which measures 2x1.5x1 inches. These batteries are rated for 150 hours of use. Ive had it for two years now and have used it fairly regularly and have yet to need to replace the batteries.
The attached head strap is both adjustable and stretchable, making it easy to fit around anyones head or adjust around a hat, helmet or cap.
For nighttime walking or hiking, the Petzl Tikka is a lifesaver. I used to hate having to walk at night with my old headlamp of a flashlight. You could do it, but it was a hassle and the light never seemed to be bright enough. The Petzl Tikka gives you a wide, bright view lighting up at least 6 to 10 feet in front of you with light bright enough to show any obstacles that may be coming up. Its not quite like hiking during the day, but its as close as you can get.
Should I get it?
Anyone who suffers under the weight, bulk and dimness of headlamps that use incandescent lights should consider upgrading to the Petzl Tikka and see what a difference the LED technology makes. The difference between the two is amazing and once you get a chance to use it, youll never go back to that old fashioned headlamp.
The Petzl Tikka is also light and small enough to be easily packed into anyones backpack and makes an excellent emergency light, should you get stuck out in the woods later than you think you were going to be.
So yes, if you have a need for a headlamp, you should treat yourself and get the Petzl Tikka.
