| Freak369's Full Review: Pez Ice Age Packs: 12CT Display |
Animated movies are cash cows when it comes to marketing; look at any box office smash in the genre of animation and you'll see exactly what I mean. "Monsters Inc", "Cars", "Toy Story", "Shrek", Finding Nemo" and others; when the films took off the merchandise hit the shelves in mass quantities. The Ice Age Pez dispensers are a nice small gift that you can tuck into an Easter basket, Christmas stocking or gift bag and they are something that kids and adults both love. Barring a few minor concerns with the teeth on Diego, Manny and Scrat [and Sid's eyes], these are kid-friendly items that are a lot of fun to play with. I was really impressed with the amount of detail that these had and was glad to be able to get all of them in the resale pack.
Ice Age Pez Collection
There are a total of four Ice Age themed dispensers to collect; all four of them are highly detailed and are great replicas of the characters that you see in the films. From the Big bug eyes of Scrat to the buck teeth of Sid, these are some of the coolest dispensers from Pez since the SpongeBob SquarePants set hit the market. Manny's eyes seem to be a bit too small and Diego looks like he is having trouble closing his mouth because of the huge fangs but that's the limitations of plastic so you have to take the god with the bad. Consider Pez to be like Lego; you can get a lot of detail but you are never going to get an exact copy. The minor visual flaws are greatly outnumbered by the perks of these dispensers so dont let a couple of small points dissuade you from getting these.
Each dispenser is packaged individually and comes with two rolls of Pez candy; replacement sleeves of candy can be found just about everywhere and cost about a dollar. Inserting the candy into the dispenser isnt hard but you may have to show kids a few times before they get the knack of it. The dispensers are well made and will put up with a lot of use and abuse; any time we have ever had one break it was because we flicked the head back and forth way too many times or they ended up getting cracked or crushed. In regards to these you will want to make sure that the teeth don't get caught on anything like clothing and that kids know not to try and "bite" other kids with them because the teeth could scrape their skin.
You can buy these individually and they come on cards as well as in plastic sleeves; if you opt to buy them in the dozen case box you will not have a choice of which dispensers you get so you are not guaranteed that you will get three of each Ice Age figure. You get the price break of buying in bulk but you don't get to choose which you receive. The loose ones cost anywhere from .99 cents or $1.99 depending on where you are shopping; Wal-Mart usually has them the cheapest and they are almost always located new the food section on an end-cap. The dozen boxes are currently priced at $11.00 at the candy warehouse / wholesale store that I frequent but that price isn't indicative of what other stores sell them for so don't be surprised if you see the dozen count box for more than that.
Some people collect Pez and leave them in the original packages hoping that their overall value will increase; there's no fun in that so buy a ton of them, open a few and save some for when the price increases. You may have to wait a long, long time for these to jump in price; they aren't considered 'rare' but Manny and Diego are a little hard to find. If you are going to buy these and save them for when kids get older or for resale you will have to decide between the plastic packages or the ones that have a cardboard backing. Both have pros and cons to them; storage is key so if you have the space for a rubber tote those are the best way to protect them.
The Bottom Line
These are awesome looking Pez dispensers that have a lot of detail to them but they are not for younger kids. I love the fact that the stems are different colors and that the characters are portrayed in their best light; simply put, the designers went with 'friendly faces' instead of scary ones for the basic design of them. If you have a kid that loved Ice Age or Ice Age II and you want to get them a unique small toy, these dispensers are a great pick. Even if you don't fill them with candy they can still have a lot of fun with them.
As always, thanks for the visit
