I'm sure that everyone has heard the saying, "never judge a book by its cover". The same basic principal holds true for people. About a year ago I was looking for a few NASCAR Pez dispensers at Wal-Mart; I had no clue who the drivers were or their respective numbers, I was getting them as a gift for someone. A few feet away I heard a woman hemming and hawing before she came into earshot. "Look at all this white trash, Wal-Mart has really gone down hill". The comment was obviously directed at me and I would have been highly offended if I hadn't turned around to see a dead ringer for Lulu Hogg complete with rollers in her hair and a dress that could easily shelter a family of four. Her making a comment about me being white trash because I was looking through the display rack for NASCAR Pez was a priceless moment and why I do have to snicker each and every time I see these in stores.
Pez NASCAR Seven Helmet Set
Which seven drivers are featured in this series? Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Bobby LaBonte, Kasey Kane and Richard Petty. Mind you, this is the listing for the set, they can also be purchased separately. There is no boxed Pez NASCAR set so ignore any site that claims that they have any type of limited edition set that comes boxed and numbered. What you will get if you pay the $49.99 is a set of Pez NASCAR dispensers in a box with a number written on it. Yes, that was the voice of experience admitting that she got ripped off at an online auction. The seller listed it as an "official Pez NASCAR boxed set of dispenser in mint condition, numbered in box". That was what I got, Pez dispensers tossed in a box with a number hand written on the side. I should have known better and checked the NASCAR Super Store before I bought the item outright.
The NASCAR Pez assortment is colorful but you do have to keep in mind that you are working with something that is on a small scale. The helmets are the main focus of the dispenser and they have the team colors and racers numbers on them, a few of them do have official sponsor logos like DuPont and STP but most of the detail is done with colors and names. Stem colors range from glossy black to green, red and blue. They are all nice looking and when you have them on display as a set the colors do compliment each other. This set comes bagged or on a card and each of them have two rolls of Pez candy and a small instruction sheet on how to properly load the candy. They have the usual Pez quality and the colors don't fade easily but if they are handled roughly they will show scuff marks and scratches.
But Freak, what about the Jimmie Johnson and Dale Jr. Pez dispensers? Ahh yes, there are indeed dispensers for these two drivers but they are not part of this set. Why? Who knows. The Dale Jr. dispensers with the 8 on them are destined to be worth money, likewise the first run of the 88 will also be worth some coin. Now, to make things even more confusing, there are also Pull N Go Pez NASCAR products and of course the whole Heavy Haulers series. The Haulers are awesome and a must have for any NASCAR fan or Pez collector. Not only do you get the NASCAR dispenser but a big rig dispenser as well. They are priced at $4.99 each but considering what you get with it, it is a better investment than just the individual dispenser.
Getting an accurate price on these is tough; if you have a Wal-Mart in your area you can get them for about $1.29 a piece but that is only for the carded version. The plastic pack version can be found at grocery stores and assorted toy stores but chances are you are going to pay more. If you want to get the set you could probably pick through all the Pez at your local store or you could go to a candy warehouse and buy a box. You are not guaranteed to get one of each driver but you will save money on the twelve count box. My local candy warehouse had dented boxes [dispensers still in perfect shape] for nine dollars so that is less than .75 cents a piece. How can they sell it for that price? The display boxes are damaged so most stores won't want them because they would have no way to have them on a shelf unless they kept the empty one.
The Bottom Line
I'll admit it, I am still learning about NASCAR and all the drivers but I've had several of these in my PEZ collection for a while now. I would have never expected to be a NASCAR fan so the irony of it is pretty funny. All seven of these dispersers are well made and will put up with a lot of use; the candy is a little on the small side so make sure younger kids don't have access to the pieces unless they are supervised. Refill candy is sold pretty much everywhere but if you are into the mint varieties they could be a little hard to find in some areas. If you are planning a big party for a race, these Pez dispensers make for cool inexpensive treats for kids or cool table toppers.
As always, thanks for the visit
