Containing a specific element, Strongid® (pyrantel pamoate) paste is an important component of any effective rotational deworming program. Pyrantel pamoate is a deworming agent used in treatment of hookworms, roundworms, pinworms, including heartworms in domesticated animals including horses, cats, dogs, and other critters.
Pyrantel pamoate is a combination of pyrantel - and pamoic acid designed to first kill and then cause expulsion of the worm from the host. It is a component found in varying quantities of dewormers intended for use for critters and humans.
Chemical class of this dewormer is unrelated to other classes of equine anthelmintics - agents that destroy or causes the expulsion of parasitic intestinal worms
Proven safe and efficient, Pfizer Strongid Paste Horse Dewormer is available online from many sites including Amazon, as well as farm supply type brick and mortar stores. I buy Pfizer Strongid Paste Horse Dewormer from Atwoods in Bartlesville, OK.
Strongid® (pyrantel pamoate) paste
Understanding that all horses are subject to internal parasites is an important aspect of horse care. Nearly all colic cases may be related to blood vessel damage caused by migrating larvae of blood worms, Strongylus vulgaris. As much as half of the deaths in horses may be related to internal parasites is sobering to those who share their lives with horses.
Pfizer Strongid Paste Horse Dewormer is an useful deworming paste used for effective control of three major parasitic forms found in horses: ascarids, strongyles and pinworms.
There are five major types of equine internal parasites which must be controlled including large and small strongyles, ascarids, bots, and pinworms.
The most common and most destructive of all internal parasites in equines are the large strongyles commonly called blood worms. With the exception of very young foals; Strongyles are found in horses of all ages. Ranging in length from 1/2" to 2", Strongyles have a cyclical life sequence which means ongoing dewormer must be administered.
As a rule adult strongyles are found, in the large intestine. Larval stages travel to the heart, liver, and lungs through blood vessels leaving in their wake scar tissue due to their destroying healthy tissue.
The mature female lays eggs which are passed from the body in droppings. The eggs hatch becoming infective larvae that contaminate grass and hay, and when ingested during graze, begin the cycle again.
When horses are kept on the same pasture year after year, the number of infective larvae accumulate and multiply. Dewormer should be given on an ongoing 8 10 week interval.
Parascaris equorum -large roundworms- commonly called Ascarids are the largest internal parasite affecting horses, ranging in length from 5" to 15", Ascarids can reach up to 1/2" in diameter when adult. Their appearance pretty much resembles a white earthworm.
These particular parasites -Ascarids- are more common in young horses and are not as often found in horses more than five years old, which is what our twenty something horses are. Immunity normally develops following exposure to large roundworms during adolescence.
Commonly called pinworms,Oxyuris equi, are found in the cecum, colon, large intestine, and rectum. Pinworms are somewhat less damaging than other internal parasite group, however, the itch of the worm is quite annoying which can cause irritation to blight the appearance and behavior of an otherwise gorgeous, well behaved horse. At times Pinworms can be seen in the droppings of heavily infected equines.
Horse owners realize that internal parasite control is a continual battle which includes addressing the parasites on an ongoing basis. These particular parasitic forms including large and small strongyles, ascarids, and pinworms are the ones which Pfizer Strongid Paste Horse Dewormer control well.
To administer: paste should be administered when mouth is free of food, and nothing is in the throat. Paste is administered according to weight of horse: check with your vet to acertain correct dosage for this OTC product.
The tube is placed in the mouth, between the gap in the teeth, and on top of the tongue, toward the back of the mouth, plunger is depressed and paste is shot into the back of the mouth toward the throat.
Raise head so paste cannot be spit out. Stroke throat, talk quietly to horse to keep animal calm until he/she has swallowed.
Mark calendar and keep deworming on schedule. Rotate with a good bot dewormer.
Some horses prove easier to deworm than do others. Temperaments are different, some horses are very resistive while others are not.
Husband, a large man, has far more success than do I in trying to use tube dewormers, Shadow will stand still for me, however, I do not have the reach that does Husband and have more problem trying to get the tube in the area of Shadows mouth that will allow the paste to be shot into the back of the mouth.
While not suggested by manufacturer: I have found that Shadow WILL accept the paste when applied to a biscuit, Cim will not.
Pfizer Strongid Paste Horse Dewormer is an easily obtained, OTC, non expensive, effective deworming paste designed for good control of three of the major parasitic forms found in horses including ascarids, strongyles and pinworms. Happy to recommend.
