Pros: good pix. many functions.Magnavox name.
Cons: I cover the cons in the review
I'm reviewing this because of the lack of private ownership info on the web for this TV.
my 16 year old magnavox 19 inch finally quit. 16 year old TV is a great brand name selling point to me. What do I know, I haven't bought a TV for 16 years.
This one is almost a month old. bought 10/25/06. It's now 11/22/06. Today marks the 4th anniversary that the remote control has lost control of the tv by pressing the info button. B4 you say it's the remote. I have to turn the machine off at the wall outlet [remove power] to shut it off and gain control either by tv controls or remote controls.
I am just hoping this is as bad as it's going to get.
Here you need to know. It requires a FLASH EXTERNAL USB memory module, an internet connection and a computer to download updates and transfer the update to the USB memory to update the TV's software.
It is not necessary to update the software to use the TV. It works out of the box.
2nd problem. The update at Magnavox is NOT labeled so that you can match the available update, with the current system software. IOW to check the updated software at magnavox can be VERY costly if you don't already have the computer and USB memory.
I had to buy the USB memory, and when using it, it did NOT auto install the way the book says. install USB to TV. Turn on TV, auto loads USB memory. NOT!
You must use the config menu, then you find the update at magnavox is the SAME as the tv's software.
I'm running this off a roof top analog antenna. In my area Cocoa Florida, it had between 9 and 11 analog channels depending on weather. the HDTV picks up over 64 channels both analog and HDTV. Despite sales pitches you do NOT need a HDTV specific antenna to get HDTV channels. For this price I would recommend a lightning protector just for the TV.
Great picture, sound may be a problem. It's too loud when switching channels despite the auto sound leveler. You'll be on the remote's volume control [that seems very slow to react] when switching channels all the time.
A problem with HDTV I suspect. poor signal and you lose the picture. and the thing can shut itself off without a signal after a few minutes.
This remote control problem is unknown to Magnavox support.
Also only voice 1-800 support. Email and chat no longer exist online.
Well after the tech replaced the Scaler board [the entire internal guts], it happened again the next day. I'd rather not have a tech dropping in every time he has a few minutes free. So it's now once again Walmarts problem.
For me, this is my last magnavox. But I'll give walmart 10 out of 10 every day. Almost a problem when they said replacement only, and what I wanted to replace it with wasn't in stock. So it was a full refund. Luckily there's 2 walmart super stores locally, and the RCA I want is in stock. Those 2 antenna inputs have me worried. 1 for ATSC, 1 for NTSC. I suppose I can hang another on the outside antenna.
