I got this CD player at Best Buy last Christmas season. I liked it mainly because of the skip protection. It's a huge improvement over my old RCA with 12 second ESP. This baby has 25 ESP3. And I love the way it looks. The whole metallic look is just great. When it comes to style, Philips really knows how to design their products. They have the flat TV, and their CD-RW drives just look really cool. The headphones that come with this CD player are definitely my favorite pair. I've never had any pair of headphones fit so well. They just feel right, and make the music sound great.
One of the features that may draw many buyers is it's ability to play CD-RWs. I don't have much of a use for this because I have a CD-R burner, not a CD-RW burner. I thought that regular CD players couldn't play CD-RWs, so this player kinda made me want to buy a CD-RW burner. And of course, it plays CD-Rs, like most CD players. It has all of the same features as most portable CD players, also. Such as repeat, program, shuffle, etc.
This CD player plays my burned discs very well. I had a Koss 3 CD stereo that couldn't play CD-Rs very good at all. But this CD player makes the burned discs sound just as good as my regular CDs. When it comes to overall sound quality, it's a little flat if you don't have DBB turned on. With DBB turned on, you get deeper bass, and more of a 3D sound. The shock protection isn't quite as good as I thought it was going to be. When the CD first starts playing, you can drop it, shake it, throw it, whatever you want to do, and it keeps on ticking. But about 3/4 through the way of a normal length CD, the shock protection starts to fade. It starts skipping way too much, and it can get annoying. If you turn it off, then turn it back on, the shock protection is back to normal, but it would be much more convenient if you didn't have to do that.
This CD player is very well built. It's very sturdy, and could probably last you a good amount of years. It's small enough to fit in your pocket and still leave a good amount of room. The design is not only cool looking, but also smart. It's a good idea to make most of the buttons different sizes so that when you have it in your pocket, you can feel the buttons and still be able to tell which button is which. And the open button isn't actually a button, just a switch that you sort of slide to open. A good idea, because you don't want to press the button by accident and open the CD player when you're in the middle of playing a CD.
Overall, this is a very good portable CD player, with a lot of good features. The price is in the right range too. It's well built, and very good looking. Some of the newest Philips players look even better. The shock protection is very good, but not perfect. But don't let that turn you off to this player, I'd say it's better than a Sony.
