| electric_boy's Full Review: Philips AZ7783 Personal CD Player |
A friend of mine got this CD player, and he said it played CD-RWs. Well, since I didn't want to shell out 200-300 dollars for a mini disc player, but I wanted re-writable CDs, I went for the Phillips. I choose. . . wisely. Here is some stuff I like about this CD player and why:
1. This thing is *small*. I thought my old Sony Skipman was small. But this is miniscule in comparison. It fits fine in my pants pocket, jacket pocket, and parka pocket.
2. Never skips. Never. I turned ESP off, and started tapping the case in time with the (uptempo) music. Short of dropping it down a flight of stairs, I couldn't get it to skip. If you were shaking this CD player enough to actually get the skip protection to kick in, the whole thing would be atomized before the 25 second buffer was emptied. My previous two Sony Skipmen skipped constantly.
3. Um, as I said, it plays re-writable CDs.
4. There are some really cool design features that this CD player has that other reviewers have touched on. To sum them up, the battery case is inside the cd compartment, making it less likely for it to break off or open up if you drop the CD player, the recessed laser makes it much less likely to skip, and you can pop the CD out without having to touch the underside of the disc (this feature is a combination of having a perfectly engineered center spindle -- doesn't take too much pressure, or too little to get the CD off -- and the way that there is about an eighth of an inch of space in between the CD and the player allows you to get your fingers around the CD.) In fact, that's one of the coolest things -- CDs just pop on and off this thing.
5. I know it's kinda silly, but this CD player has a resume feature -- neither of my two Sony Skipmen had one.
Things about this CD player which really frost my pajamas:
1. The headphones that come with this thing suck. Someone else reviewing this player claimed that it was a bit too quiet, and that the bass response sucked. Well, that was a function of the headphones. I tried this CD player out with a number of different headphones, and the ones that came with the player were the worst. If you turn it up loud, and use the bass boost, then they are okay, and really pretty sonically accurate. But they are abysmal at low volumes (which is most volumes with this player) and without bass boost, they are quite tinny. I suppose, if you lost a set of ear muffs, you could use these instead. They are certainly large enough for it. But spend a few extra bucks and get a good set of headphones for this CD player.
2. The volume knob. It's kinda recessed and out of the way, so when you go to spin it, your finger just slides along the case, without affecting the volume much. Yay, if you are putting it in your pocket. Not yay, if you want to turn the thing up or down. I adjust the volume more than I have to worry about it accidentaly getting nudged, so this is an annoyance, and not a feature. At least it turns the Right Way. (There are two ways for volume knobs to work: rotating toward the front of the player turns the volume up (this is the Right Way) and vice versa.)
3. Coming from a Sony Skipman background, I got used to Sony Skipman controls on the front of the player. Well, the Phillips is too small for that, so it has all the controls on the top. I'll deal, I suppose. Also, I'm always trying to plug my headphones in on the wrong side. And, Wal-Mart didn't have it in the color that I wanted. But now I'm just whining. . .
Overall, this is an excellent CD player. With the exception of the volume knob, (my other two complaints are easily fixed) this thing rules!
