I recently bought a new CD player for myself after often borrowing my daughter's. So I trotted happily off to Target to buy myself one. The first one I bought didn't work, no matter what sort of power supply I gave it. So, I decided to spend a bit more and get one with the features that I desired.
I chose the Philips player because it looked kind of nice and had 40 sec skip protection. I bought it to have around the house, and to have for an upcoming airplane trip. I also chose it because it looked small and lightweight.
I have been very very happy with this purchase. The CDs play clearly and this player handles extra long home recorded CDs without blinking while my portable boom box just stares at me uncomprehendingly.
Two features regarding the batteries are very nice. One is that the battery door is under the cd tray. This makes for a very nice and compact player. Also it runs on only 2 AA batteries for over 10 hours. That is a great feature, fewer batteries that last a long time.
I also like that I got a complete car kit with this cd player for a very reasonable price. I thought I wouldn't use a bit of it, but on a recent driving trip, it got used in our car once we were out of radio range of our town.
The first set of batteries lasted me quite awhile, I used it around the house before we travelled, for nearly 2 hours driving, then another 3 hours on the airplane and for several nights while we were in Arizona. Then I had to change batteries... I would estimate 10-14 hours on one set,right where they say it should be. I also like that you can turn off the skip protection when you are sitting still or youi can just plug it into the wall if you are in range of an outlet.
As for the sound, I think it's excellent. Perhaps a little quiet, but I think a different set of headphones could make a difference there. The pair that come with it are larger, but the larger ear pads keep the speaker portion of the phone out away from your ears somewhat. The way the phones fit has served me well since it has allowed me to hear my children when they need me or the flight attendant on the airplane.
I have also been using this player with a small pair of Sony speakers I have had forever, and the player can almost blast out the little speakers when I turn on their power boost and max the volume on the cd.
This cd player also comes with the basic features of play and skip, as well as programming and several modes, such as shuffle, repeat and scan. I don't use those features as much, but plan to investigate them soon.
I think I got a great deal for my money and would buy Philips again.
