UPDATE: Feb 03. After almost two and a half years this machine is still functioning flawlessly. It still brews at 190 degrees plus and the carafe still keeps the coffee hot for more time than needed. I make 2 to 3 pots of coffee a day in this machine, so it does not sit idly. has been a fine product.
I am a coffee fanatic. I have been known to drive great distance to get a cup of rich, flavorful coffee from a serious coffee shop. I have long wanted to make coffee of that caliber at home. I did much research and determined that the two main criteria for a machine that can make great coffee is that it must have a high brew temperature. the second was that it must have an insulated carafe so that the coffee remains drinkable beyond the 20 minutes that most warmer plates afford.
I read reviews and went to the web sites of all the coffee makers I could find with these features.
The Philips machine brews coffee at around 190 degrees. this is more than adequate. anything below 170 and the coffee is not fully extracted and has a weak and washed out flavor. Above boiling and the coffee is over extracted, tending towards bitterness.
The Carafe is made by Thermos. I don't believe it is a vacuum insulated carafe, but it does keep the coffee drinkable for at least 2 hours. Coffee in my carafe was still 160 degrees after one and a half hours. Some of the glass and vacuum stainless steel carafes advertise times of up to 4 or 5 hours. I find this hard to believe, but I am sure the time will be longer than 2 hours.
this machine has a cassette that holds a water filter. it is good for about 6 months. If you don't want to use it, you can take it out or just put water in the other side.
Of the machines that had the two requirements I desired, the Philips was the most reasonably priced.
Regarding the section asking who would like this machine. I would have to select "other" Those who love great coffee.
