Pros: IPOD, SD memory cards, CD, Mp3, VCD, SVCD, DIVX, Video in and out.
Cons: The built in stand seems a bit flimsy. It could have a bit louder speakers.
The Bottom Line: The only thing this is lacking is the ability to read ebooks (text). It is great for too many uses to list here. Definately worth the money.
firebird1's Full Review: Philips DCP851 8.5 in. Portable DVD Player
My mom has been wanting a portable DVD pretty much since they came out. I have been urging her to wait till the technology gets better. Well now her time has come.
At 8.5 in. viewing size it is not as big as a laptop but it also is not as heavy or hot as one either. You can comfortably hold it in your hand or set it on a table to view it.
My favorite features are the DIVX support and the SD memory card slot. It is compatible with larger SD memory card capacities such as 8 GB cards which means using DIVX to compress the video you can have say 24 eps of your fav shows which is usually at least one season without having to carry all those DVDs with you. Also using the DS memory cards you can watch those shows and then copy over the info on the card and put other shows or movies on there. Much better than burning to DVD a TV show you saved on your computer or dvr when you only plan on watching it once. (Hey folks those plastic disks do not degrade so lets reuse when we can!)
I do not have an IPOD but I am sure that is on mom's list of things to get. If and when I get one I will talk about that feature.
Using it as a mp3 player is very nice considering it can use CDR, DVDr, and SD memory cards to pull the mp3s from not to mention the IPOD. My mp3 players use the SD memory cards so I can just pull them out of the mp3 player and put them in this machine making it very convenient.
VCD and SVCD what are they and why is it nice to have them supported? VCD is Video Compact Disk, and SVCD is Super Video Compact Disk. To keep things simple they are video formats which predate DVD. They can be run on most modern PCs and they are more popular outside of the US. So why care about these. Well there are at least two reasons. If you like anime or japanese cartoons, many of these are available in both formats online. also if you have a computer with a cd burner and no dvd burner you can still convert video to these formats and make your own VCD and SVCDs. This is especially useful if you are constantly doing presentations etc. So it is very handy that this machine can play these.
Video out: This unit has the ability to output video using composite connectors. Meaning you can hook this up to your big screen TV, projector, etc for a larger viewing screen.
Video IN: this has all sorts of possibilities from using this unit as a monitor for video games to hooking this to a digital to Analog tv tuner (with composite outputs) to make this into a portable tv. This could also be done with a vcr, satelite converter, or other composite device.
It can function as a digital picture frame with features rarely seen on one including panning, zoom, and rotate.
It is well made and comes with chargers for home and auto as well as a nice cover to protect it from scratches. It even comes with a remote control. The internal power will last about 2.5 hours on a full charge but I usually use the power adapter. About the only thing I could think of that would make it better is if it would allow you to read ebooks on it. The speakers are a bit lacking at times but that is probably the source video or mp3's fault and could be dealt with by adding a pair of amped multimedia speakers. The stand is also a bit flimsy and only good on hard surfaces. On a bed for example you would have to lean it up against a pillow or hold it.
