This is for the Phillips DSR6000 (eOpinions has no place but here for this review)
THIS UNIT ONLY WORKS WITH DIRECT TV, DO NOT BUY IF YOU SUBSCRIBE TO A DIFFERENT PROVIDER
If you don't have Tivo, you may be wondering what all the chatter is about. It cannot be put into words how cool this concept is. Problem was when you used Tivo, either it is following instructions (you programmed to tape something) or thinking for you (uses AI to figure out what you like and tapes it). It is pretty much always taping something. In the past if it was taping and you wanted to watch or tape something off live tv, you were out of luck. Enter the DSR6000 with Dual Tuners...Problem solved!
No such thing as a free lunch
It is important to note that you can get this receiver for 99$, but there are other costs associated with it. I got this for my Parents and figured out that the dual tuner requires another signal from the LNB. This means I had to run another wire from the satellite to the back of the tuner. Dual LNB $40 /RG6 Satellite Cable (100 Feet of) $30. Tivo subscription is $9.99/Mo. or $250.00 per lifetime of receiver (I opted for lifetime). It tapes line-ups and makes recommendations based on what you watch, and that makes some people nervous, but I think it is well worth. It is not like they share this info with anyone.
What does it do?
I couldn't possibly list all that it does. There is, of course, the normal Tivo stuff :pause and rewind live tv, zap commercials from taped shows. Here are some additional functions:
*Unmatched Picture Quality: Usually these DVR's must decode and then re-encode a given signal. This uses the same encoding as Direct TV, so exact signal is spit out to TV. Incredible!
*Search: The unit downloads 14 days of info. you can search the info by Actor, Director, Title, Genre, even Keyword. It returns all instances of the parameter from your query that occur in the next 2 weeks! You can record all of them, some of them, or just save it as a list
*Dual Tuner: Watch two shows at once. No picture in picture, but you can actually pause one football game and switch tuners. Then pause the other and switch back...watching both w/out missing a second of either. Also allows you to tape two things at once, and watch something you have taped all simultaneously. Or tape something and watch live tv.
*AI: This artificial intelligence is incredible. It has rating buttons. Based on the rating buttons, what you tape, and what you watch, it will always be taping something it knows you like. This is done without you doing anything.
