good design, but bad usability

  • User Rating: Very Good
  • Sound:
  • Ease of Use:
  • Durability:
  • Battery Life:
  • Portability:
Pros:Small & beautiful, direct USB connector, good sound, great as a USB key (fast copy)
Cons:User interface frustratingly slow and too few folder play options, can't easily choose songs
The Bottom Line: I need (another) firmware upgrade to improve the slowness (and give it 5 stars). But it's a keeper for now--the size and USB key feature.

Pros are similar to other reviewers, but did they not notice the total lag when using the controls? Maybe it's just my unit! I really can't search through all the songs I can load on this because it's way too slow to scroll through each song either in shuffle or in folder mode.

In folder mode, I can't get the device to play all folders and this is annoying. My old iRiver in contrast had both lightning fast song advance and would continue past the current folder. Also, the old iRiver would play sounds while fast forwarding helping you identify the part of the song--when I fast-forward using the Philips, it is silent and too slow.
Update: I did find the support page (below), and I was able to download firmward 6.5 (I had 6.0). The speed issues have been improved but not fully resolved. It's more usable now, but it still lags and does not give a sound sample when fast forwarding.

Also, Philips web site is as slick as the product - in the sense that I can't find any downloads of upgraded firmware (i.e. the site is beautiful but not usable).
Update: On further searching, I found http://www.philips.com/support, which is unfortunately nowhere linked on the product page that I could find.

The best thing about this device is that it is so convenient to load that I truly use it as a USB backup key for school. Also, the USB direct key connector slides out of the body, which I prefer to having a completely removable cap that I might lose. The device is incredibly small even with the USB direct key connector hidden inside it.
