razberryswirl's Full Review: Philosophy Hope In A Jar 8 oz
I am a fairly new consumer of Philosophy products - I started using them about three months ago and have been transitioning all of my skin care products to Philosophy as I run out since then.
The first product I used was Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser. My mother suggested the product to me because I have combination skin prone to breakouts - and a hormone problem that doesn't help this. I am the type of girl who likes my cleanser and moisturizer to be in the same line, so naturally, I purchased Hope in a Jar shortly after I received the cleanser.
Skin Type
My skin is combination - but Hope in a Jar is really geared toward all skin types. ALL skin types need moisture - and if you have very dry skin, there is a Hope in a Jar for dry, sensitive skin. I've been trying to get away from using harsh beauty products in general with tons of crap in them and this is the best I've found so far - I'm sticking with this. There is no miracle product that will stop your skin from breaking out - it's best just to stay simple and deal with breakouts as they come.
Using Hope in a Jar
This is a thick cream that I rub into my palms and gently massage into my chin area, cheeks and forehead. I wait a few minutes and then use my tinted moisturizer and go. I don't typically moisturize before bed unless I'm having especially dry skin.
I have read some reviews on other sites that say this cream has a foul scent. I was surprised at the scent when I first used this cream, but it doesn't bother me. This product was first used medicinally from what I understand, and now available to a general market. The best I can describe this scent is "theraputic". Again, it doesn't bother me. And for someone who uses many natural products that include essential oils like patchouli, this is a very tame scent!
Results
As I mentioned, I've been using this product for about three months and of course there is no miracle product that will stop my skin from breaking out. But I feel more control over my skin in general - and I feel the texture of my skin has greatly improved. Breakouts don't last very long at all, and my skin heals quicker when it happens.
Price...
I was a little alarmed at the price. Hope in a Jar is one of the priciest basic products within the Philosophy lineup, considering it's one of those products that you use often and replace. I purchased the 4oz for $55 from Sephora.com and after three months I still have a couple weeks worth left. I recently purchased a huge 8oz for $105 from QVC.com and that will probably last me six months since I only use it once a day. Sephora has a .5oz available for only $15, so that would be a great way to try out the product, and then if you like it, go for the 8oz.
Final Thoughts/Suggestions
I highly recommend Philosophy's Hope in a Jar. I feel like I've finally found a line that I can trust consistently. You gotta love the simple packaging and the little sayings on each of the products.
I also recommend:
- Purity Made Simple: a very gentle cleanser for all skin types.
- Hope in a Bottle: A companion to Hope in a Jar, but this lotion contains a bit of salicylic acid. I use this on the days during and just after a breakout.
- On a Clear Day H202: This is a peroxide cream that I use before bed on areas where I've broken out to help dry out/clear those areas.
