Preamble
Hopefully, you just read yesterday how much I love and spoil my hair. Because of that, I will try basically anything once to see if it does something to improve the overall condition of my hair. At one time, I made my way through every Philosophy product they offered for my hair type.
Philosophy - The Company
Cristina Carlino is the brain behind Philosophy. Prior to creating this line of products, she was creator, founder and CEO of the BioMedic line. If you're not familiar with BioMedic, it's a medical skin care company that specializes in in-office peels and products for environmentally damaged skin, hyper pigmentation and acne.
Their approach to the marketing of their products is unique. First thing you'll notice is that they use lowercase lettering. They say that it "embraces the childhood consciousness in all of us". Second, their packaging is very plain. The bottles are either clear or cloudy white with black lettering and black caps. Third, all of their products are packaged with some sort of neat philosophical type statement.
Although Philosophy does not do animal testing on their products, they do admit that ingredients from their products may have been tested by someone else in another time period.
What Is Philosophy Shear Splendor?
Cute of them to work shear into a hair product, isn't it?! Philosophy's Shear Splendor is their daily conditioner for chemically treated hair. It's supposed to keep your strands moist and protect them against styling aids and products.
It comes in a clear 16 ounce bottle. The product is yellow-ivory in color and the thickness is medium in consistency - like a light type of lotion.
The smell is incredible!!! I can't adequately describe it except to say that it has a very subtle citrus smell to it.
Who should use this product? According to Philosophy, you're a good candidate for this if your hair is in poor condition, you have chemically treated hair, or you like non-heavy daily conditioners.
My Experiences
Philosophy says to apply a small amount to clean, wet, hair. Leave in 60 seconds and rinse. Because of the time I spend in the shower, it usually ends up being about 2-3 minutes.
Going on, the conditioner is extremely silky and smooth. Combined with the fragrant citrus smell, it makes me a happy person. When you do apply it, take the time to make sure that it is evenly distributed. It's not a particular problem with this product - just with all conditioners - some people throw the stuff on without making sure to spread it evenly. You'll get most benefit by making sure that you start with your scalp and work down through your hair strands. It won't take that long people :).
Rinsing goes very easy. Takes only a minute or so to get everything out.
I've used this product all year round, in both hard water and soft water environments. If you use this with soft water, you might wonder if the conditioner has affected your hair at all. Why? Because it has a very light, slick feeling on your hair, similar to what soft water feels like.
In a hard water environment, you can tell a difference right after your rinse it. Your hair is very silky and soft.
I find that in the Summer and in soft water environments, I get more bang for my buck. Why? My hair isn't quite as frazzled and dry and the soft water just seems to mix much better with the conditioners formula.
Some times, I let my hair air dry and other times, I blow dry it. Either way, I always apply something else to my hair to control any frizz. This conditioner - and almost every other single conditioner alone - does not control frizz.
The one disappointing thing about the conditioner is that I wish that the fragrant citrus scent would still be there. Even when I just bum around the house and not add any other styling product, the fragrance fades quickly. Wahhhh!
Product Philosophy
Just love their cute little sayings :).
too often we are conditioned to believe that splendor comes from only the big events or the roller-coaster rides. yet, the truest splendor is often ignited by the tiny spark of a child's innocent smile, by laughing with friends, or by the daily ritual of falling in love over and over aging with the same person. discover your splendor in the reality of what is simple, what is pure, and what is real.
For You Ingredient Happy People
water, cetearyl alcohol, glycerin, cyclomethicone, behentrimonium methosulfate, behentrimonium chloride, cetyl alcohol, triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil, hydrolyzed silk, panthenol, tocopheryl acetate, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, fragrance, tetrasodium edta, propylene glycol, methylparaben, propylparaben, diazolidinyl urea, fd&c yellow no.5, citric acid
The End
Although I love the fragrance of this conditioner and I'm happy with its performance, I don't buy it very often. At $18.00 a pop for 16 ounces, I can purchase at least 3-4 Aussie 3 Minute Miracle, Physique, or Finesse conditioners that do the same job. Still, it's a solid product and if you have a chance to put it on your Christmas list, I encourage you to do so. It's someone else's money so you won't feel so guilty :).
