Philosophy Gingerbread Man - "A Good Man Nourishes Your Body and Soul"

Written: Jan 11 '04 (Updated Jan 11 '04)
Pros:EVERYTHING!
Cons:If you're cheap...the price!
The Bottom Line: If you can find him, you gotta get you some!

“I just love taking baths with him”

“Finally, a man that’s a true giver”

“I finally found a man even my mother loves”

“This is the best guy on the planet earth”

Yes I’m talking about my man! My Philosophy Gingerbread Man Scrub! I got it for Christmas from my brother and I look forward to using it each and every time! These quotes are all over the adorable little box my Gingerbread Man scrub came in! And how true they are!

The Product:
This scrub was sold out everywhere this year! Sephora sold out, Drugstore.com sold out and Sephora.com sold out. It was only found at www.philosophy.com and that was the first week of December. By the 15th it too was sold out!

And here’s why!

The Gingerbread Man scrub from Philosophy is a HUGE 20 oz tub of salt scrub for $25. It’s the same price everywhere so you can’t comparison shop.

Here’s what the Philosophy site says about him:
“he calls, but only to tell you he has to cancel, he remembers your birthday, but forgets your anniversary. he puts his dirty laundry in the hamper, but leaves the toilet seat up. there is no such thing as the perfect man, that is until now.....

just in time for the holidays, we are pleased to bring back the gingerbread man. a lovable, huggable chap who is sure to turn your stressful holiday in one full of sweet surprises!

he's a little rough around the edges, but once you get to know him, he warms right up! the gingerbread man is a hot salt scrub for bath or shower designed to exfoliate and polish rough, dry skin while detoxifying and invigorating the senses with the refreshing, delicious scent of ginger. the gingerbread man is an oil-free, water-soluble, heat-as-you-rub, glycerin-based, therapeutic salt scrub that contains sea salt and plankton and kelp extract to help moisturize, tone and smooth the skin. the gingerbread man will nourish your body and soul. he is a gift that every girl deserves!”

And he is all that!

Philosophy claims this scrub is a ‘hot’ scrub with a warming formula. I have not felt that at all and I’ve used it half a dozen times so far. But that’s ok, I love it anyway!

It contains sea salt to help exfoliate dry, flaky skin. It also has natural extracts to help in moisturization. It claims to be an oil free formula.

To use, just scoop a tablespoon out of the jar and apply to DRY skin. Rub in a circular motion for one or two minutes and rinse. Use once or twice a week.

Ingredients:
SEA SALT, GLYCERIN, POLYGLYCERYL-10 DIPALMITATE, FRAGRACE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, PLANKTON EXTRACT, MACROCYSTIS PYRIFERA (KELP) EXTRACT, ALGAE EXTRACT, FUCUS VESICULOSUS (BLADDERWRACK) EXTRACT, CARAMEL, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, METHYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN.

The texture is hard to describe. It looks like actual gingerbread dough because it’s a nice rich deep brown. And looks to have tons of cinnamon and spices in it. But the texture is hard to describe. It’s thick like dough, but wetter. If that makes sense. Well and it’s gritty because of the salt too.

The scent is AMAZING! I doesn’t smell like actual gingerbread. It’s spicy yet sweet. And the ginger is very pronounced. But it does NOT smell like gingerbread so don’t go buying it thinking you’re gonna get some foody scent. You won’t.

My Experience:
I’ve had two samples of this scrub from Sephora and fell in love with the scent. Then I fell in love with the texture and ‘oil-free” aspect.

I’ve used other scrubs from Bath and Body Works and Origins that made me almost break my leg getting in the shower because of all the oil in the product that was left over as residue in my shower. You won’t get that with the Gingerbread man as there’s no oil. The texture is grainy and a bit gritty, but no huge chunks of salt. And it’s not real harsh either. It doesn’t feel like it’s digging into your skin and cutting it like some salt scrubs.

Oh and one other important thing, it doesn’t burn! Sometimes I have little cuts on my hands or skin, or blemishes…or even a cut from a razor. Other salt scrubs would send me through the roof in pain from the sting using them would give me. I don’t get that from the Gingerbread Man…that’s because he’s so smooth and sweet and would never hurt me.

I feel no warming feeling from this scrub. So I have no idea why they call it a hot salt scrub. Sorry. Don’t buy it for it’s ‘warming’ ability. I also don’t use it dry. I get in the shower and get all warmed up and wet, and then the Gingerbread Man gets used. I find that sometimes when applying it the scrub clumps up and isn’t easy spread. So you kinda have to be careful half of it doesn’t wind up in the bottom of the shower. I’ve mastered this though, so I don’t lose any product due to clumping anymore!

Would I buy this again? HECK YEAH! I love the scent, the texture and the way it reacts with my skin. I do notice a difference in my skin, not near as dry feeling. I still need moisturizer in the winter though.

Mr. Gingerbread Man…you are definitely “the man I’ve been searching for all of my life”!
