| fraygirl's Full Review: Philosophy the Gingerbread Man |
When I saw Philosophys latest (and, unfortunately, limited) body scrub offering called The Gingerbread Man, I knew that I had to try it. Im a big sucker for all things ginger-y and spicy, so any willpower I may have had basically went out the window! So I bought two 20 oz. jars for a pricey $25.00 each and hurried home for a dose of body scrub heaven.
WOW! The first thing you notice when you open the jar is the fabulous scent-not quite as gingerbready as I had hoped, but very nice nonetheless. The scrub itself is dark brown and chunky with sea salt. (It doesnt sound that appealing, but you should really try to get past appearances!) It is also extremely dense, as it is not an oil-based scrub. So this will seem very thick to you if you are more accustomed to the body scrubs offered by Origins, Bath and Body Works, etc.
When I use this scrub, I scoop a little into my hand and then mix it with a bit of water from the shower. That way, its not so dry and its much easier to work with. It also means that the contents of the jar will probably last a very long time. That makes the price tag much easier to swallow!
According to the folks at Philosophy, The Gingerbread Man is an oil-free, water-soluble, heat-as-you-rub, glycerin-based, therapeutic salt scrub that contains sea salt and plankton and kelp extract to help moisturize, tone and smooth the skin. Supposedly, you can use it to smooth out those dry elbows and knees, to dry any oily areas, and to soften those parched patches of skin. From my experience, the Gingerbread Man does live up to its claims concerning dry skin
please check other reviews for experience with oily skin.
The scrub has a very nice effect on my skin. I scrub the Gingerbread Man onto my legs, arms, shoulders, torso (and other unmentionable spots) once or twice a week. It exfoliates extremely well, it smells wonderful, and the lack of oiliness is nice. My skin is extremely dry, and this scrub leaves it feeling incredibly soft without a trace of irritation. This scrub rinses off very easily, leaving not a trace of oily residue on you or the tub. Unfortunately, the fragrance does not seem to last once you rinse the scrub away, so be sure to inhale deeply while youre scrubbing! (An important word of warning: always use the scrub before shaving. Applying this to a freshly-shaved leg will probably cause you some momentary stinging and anguish!)
The first time I used the scrub, I applied it after I was already in the shower. (I was in such a rush to experience the Gingerbread Man!) I later read on the box that this is a self-heating scrub, which is best applied before you hit the shower. I tried to apply the scrub before showering, but, honestly, I never have been able to feel the heating that it claims to offer. Perhaps Im misunderstanding the concept here, but I am disappointed that the Gingerbread Man does not really create a warming sensation
at least not for me.
I thought that some of you might be interested in the ingredients, so here they are
straight from the box! If you mix together: sea salt, glycerin, polyglycery-10-dipalmitate, fragrance, butylene glycol, propylene glycol, plankton extract, macrocystis pyrifera (kelp) extract, algae extract, fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack) extract, caramel, diazolidinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben
then you will have The Gingerbread Man Salt Scrub. Now why didnt I think of that!?
So what is my bottom-line opinion on this product? While the price may seem a bit steep, you really are getting a lot of very nice product for the money. Every time I use this scrub, I really feel like Im doing something nice for my skin and myself. So, if you have room in your budget, give it a try. Dont procrastinate, though, because this is a limited edition and it will probably be tough to find if you wait too long.
Remember at the start of this Epinion, when I bought two jars of The Gingerbread Man? Well, I gave one of the jars to a very good friend for Christmas. She was thrilled, but I think Ill regret this bout of generosity when my jar is empty!
