| leonawong's Full Review: Pho Pasteur |
Pho Pasteur is a chain of Vietnamese restaraunts in the Boston area. They have locations in Chinatown, Brighton/Allston, Harvard Square, the Theatre District, and Newbury Street. Of all the locations, I recommend the original restaurant that started it all. Chinatown. (The Harvard Square location is more expensive. The Theatre District location offers a more Americanized menu. And the Brighton/Allston location has gone downhill since one of their chefs left to start his own restaraunt, Lemongrass, in Brookline.) Below is my review of the Chinatown location.
Do not let the cramped, dingy atmosphere discourage you. Pho Pasteur has a lot to offer. I think this is the best Vietnamese restaurant in all of Boston. If you are looking for a good, healthy meal at a low price, Pho Pasteur is the place.
Pho is a staple of Vietnamese cuisine. Pho involves a lot of prep work. The bones used to make the broth are boiled and reboiled until the broth is clear. This process can take several hours. A sign of a good pho place is clear broth. Pho Pasteur has the best pho I have tasted. Their broth is clear, which shows they care enough to put the time and effort in to make to make quality food. I have been to other restaraunts that served scummy broth with their pho. An obvious sign that shortcuts were taken. No shortcuts at Pho Pasteur!
The meals at Pho Pasteur are healthy, light, and filling. I never feel guilty about eating too much. You can choose from a variety of pho (noodle soups), bun (vermicelli), and other dishes. My favorites are the Fresh Spring Rolls and the Seafood Pho. The shakes are yummy, too. I recommend mango and jackfruit.
Your money goes a long way here. There's no need to bring more than $10. You can get a huge bowl of pho for $5. Unless you are famished, I recommend against getting the extra large bowls. When Pho Pasteur says extra large, they really mean it.
The actual space is quite small. If you go during lunch, expect a wait. Since Pho Pasteur is so popular, the waits are usually out the door. However, the service is quite efficient. So, even though the waits may seem long, the lines actually move at a reasonable pace. I usually go at 1pm or 11am to beat the lunch crowd. At the peak of lunch, the longest I have ever had to wait was twenty minutes.
