Pros: A superbright keychain light for occasional use. Almost Unbreakable!
Cons: Seemingly expensive but new products have to recoup costs and earn a profit too.
The Bottom Line: A really bright lamp and a fine quick emergency flashlight made even more helpful with the newly added lock on switch.
You will use it if you have one.
zlotmachinskyr's Full Review: Photon Micro-Light II
A novel, light weight, very bright, 6 volt LED bulb flashlight. Almost weightless and extremely tiny in size. Rugged plastic housing can take a beating. Runs on two expensive lithium disk batteries, the lions share of this products cost.
Held tightly together with 4 small philips head sheet metal screws. The bulb is a LED (light enitting diode) which is rugged, durable and long lived. LEDs are polarized by definition so when you change batteries, if and when you ever do, the LED will not illuminate if you reverse the polarity.
Runs a fairly long time on the batteries inside and very brightly over most of the batteries life. Lithium batteries also have the advantage of good subzero temperatures performance, a very long shelf life (usually 10 years with 50% power remaining if never used), and best of all they do not leak. I have yet to see any lithium battery of any size, style or shape ever leak.
So this light does what it is supposed to very well and very lightly as well in terms of mass and photon output.
Changing batteries is not that easy. The 4 screws require a jewelers screwdriver and manual dexterity to extract and insert new lithium disk batteries and then try to wrap the two wires from the LED back into proper contact with the power cells. Not too easily done and most likely to push this unit into the disposable bin category. The updated Photon II Microlite has a slider switch that clicks into place to keep the light lit hands free and is a major improvement plus should boost sales by using up the power faster.
The Photon II Microlight comes with several colors of LED: white, red, blue, yellow are the ones I have seen. The white is the brightest and for me personally the most useful. Red is supposed to preserve night vision for night bird spotting, star gazing and piloting aircraft. I only use the white version. Use of the other colors suitablity must be determined by the end users.
God Bless Our Women
A nice gift for every one really. I really gag on the commercial term stocking stuffer so I dub this high tec lamp a love-gift and should be given to all your loved ones especially our charished wives, daughters, sisters and female family and friends. God bless our women!
Now for the men who are worthy, they should have one too.
Addendum: Size is only slightly larger than the two coin shaped lithium batteries inside, similar in size to a U.S. quarter dollar coin. This flashlight requires a lot of thumb pressure to illumimate so that it doesn't come on accidentally and waste expensive lithium battery power.
I got my first one as a love-gift from my beloved Auntie and later, others from REI. Better deals are available from suppliers on the web or catalog sales. The cost per unit should drop as the number of units ordered increases. Shop around for best price.
