Physique Spiral Gel: Define & Tame Those Curls!

Written: Aug 14 '02
Pros:Controls Frizziness, Great Smell, Light Gel Formula
Cons:N/A
The Bottom Line: This gel works to control frizziness while defining each curl for a wonderfully smooth and healthy look.

For anyone who has naturally curly hair, you know what it's like to try to tame and control the curls. While others think that I have been blessed, I believe I was actually cursed! I grew up with frizzy red curls, and I cannot count the times I was called Annie. When I finally decided to have my hair chemically straightened at a salon, my family and friends balked at the idea. I'm sure however that if they had to deal with the curls day in and day out, they would throw in the towel and just shave themselves bald!

During my pregnancy with my second daughter my pregnancy hormones pulled a fast one on me. My straight hair style became incredibly difficult to achieve, and finally I gave up. This of course left me to deal with my curls. I found myself trying out several products hoping to find one that could help tame the frizziness and define the curl. I was quite surprised when I came across a product that actually worked...Physique Spiral Gel.

~*~Cost~*~

I purchased a 5.3oz/150g tube of Physique Spiral Gel at my local K-Mart for $6.99. I was fortunate to have had a coupon for buy one Physique product, get the other one free. This product as well as other Physique products can be found in discount stores such as Target, K-Mart and Wal-Mart as well as some grocery stores and drug stores, varying in price.

~*~Product Description~*~

Physique Spiral Gel comes in a tube that stands on its flip top cap. This of course makes dispensing much easier as the gel is always at the top of the tube. Physique has created several hair styling lines which contain several different products, designed to work together. Physique Spiral Gel is part of the Curl Defining line of Physique products. Each Physique line has its own color coding as well. The tube of this gel is silver, and its color code is green.

I mentioned that Physique Spiral Gel is part of the Curl Defining line of Physique products. Let me just give the run down on the list of products that are supposed to be used with Physique Spiral Gel to obtain the best curl defining results:

Curl Defining Shampoo * Curl Defining Conditioner * Frizz Control Curl Cream * Curl Defining Scrunching Foam * Keep Your Curls Hairspray * Curl Defining Hair Dryer * Curl Defining Iron

Physique promises that their Physique Spiral Gel "Aligns irregular air space along hair strands to control frizz and enhance curl definition, so you can define the curly style you want."

Physique Spiral Gel is a very light weight clear gel with a fantastic scent. The gel isn't nearly as sticky as other gel products on the market. Physique Spiral Gel is to be applied to damp hair, staying away from the roots and concentrating on the ends. This product is also recommended for color treated and permed hair.

Ingredients:

Water, PVP/VA Copolymer, Carbomer, Triethanolamine Isosteareth-20, Polyquaternium-11, Polyquaternium-4, DMDM Hydantoin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Fragrance, Octyl Salicylate.

~*~My Experience~*~

I really didn't expect great things from Physique Spiral Gel. Nothing against the Physique product line of course, but when you've dealt with naturally curly hair for 25 years, you just don't expect many products to do anything to help tame it! I was pleasantly surprised when Physique Spiral Gel actually managed to tame the frizziness and give my curls some definition.

Most gel products that I have used are incredibly thick, messy, and generally a headache to apply. I have found though that Physique Spiral Gel isn't anything like the other gels I have used. This gel is a great light weight, and non sticky formula that absorbs into the hair strands quickly. The fact that it quickly absorbs means that my damp hair doesn't dry into a stiff, sticky mess.

I applied Physique Spiral Gel liberally to the ends of my hair, scrunching as I went. I avoided the roots, just as the back of the product instructs. I usually let my curls air dry, as blow drying only makes the frizziness worse. Normally when I let my hair air dry, I still have some frizziness. However, I could immediately tell a difference in my hair once it had started drying.

Instead of my curls clumping together into one big frizzy mess, I could actually tell that each curl had some definition to it. My hair appeared smoother as well. Now I don't know that Physique Spiral Gel necessarily "Aligns irregular air space" but it definitely worked at bringing out each curl. The great definition and control lasted throughout the day, even through the southern heat and humidity. I also found that because the frizziness was under control my hair appeared much healthier and shiny.

I found the scent very appealing, and loved the fact that I could still smell it throughout my day. Physique Spiral Gel washes easily from my hair and doesn't leave any sticky residue behind. I experienced no scalp irritations when using this product.

~*~Overall Opinion~*~

I would highly recommend Physique Spiral Gel. This gel works to control frizziness while defining each curl for a wonderfully smooth and healthy look.
