jo.com's Full Review: Milton Bradley Pictionary Junior
We have always been a board game family and lately we have been having “game nights” at my religious organization. I have had the chance of bringing out some of my favorite games. Pictionary tops the list. It is the one game that my 3 adult children can play with us and still have fun doing so. I can almost guarantee that you will laugh while playing this game.
Pictionary is for ages 12 and up. There is Pictionary Junior for ages 7-11. The adult version is called “The Game of Quick Draw” but I am far from an artist and being able to draw well isn’t the goal. The goal is to be able to draw something well enough so that your partner or teammates can guess what you have drawn and they have 60 seconds to do so.
What you get are:
•A gameboard with squares on it that say: P, O, A, D, AP.
•A one-minute timer.
•500 word cards
•Die
•4 markers used to go from square to square. The game can be played with 3-16 players. Obviously if there are more than 4, you set up teams.
•4 category cards. The categories correspond with the letters on the squares: Person/Place/Animal =P; Object =O; Action =A; D =Difficult; and AP =All Play. The P category is self explanatory but an example would be swordfish; the O category refers to things that can be seen or touched such as sandbag; the A refers to things that can be performed or events such as bait; the D are challenging words such as traction and AP can be any type of word but everyone plays.
Regarding the AP. If a player lands on the AP square, all the players or teams play. In addition some of the words have a triangle next to them and that means it is an All Play word.
How to Play:
Let’s say there are 6 people playing Pictionary – that is 3 teams. For the first round the teams roll the die to see who will go first and that team picks which person will be the drawer of the picture. He picks a card from the deck and has 5 seconds to look at it.
Believe me, some words are very hard and no amount of staring would help me be able to draw the word traction. That is a very, very difficult one. Let’s take the word eyebrow pencil. I start drawing with the timer on and keep drawing, crossing out what I’ve drawn, tried a different tactic until either my teammate can guess that I have drawn an eyebrow pencil or I run out of time. If he can guess my picture we roll the die and move to a square that will tell us what category picture to draw next and my teammate would do the drawing, I would do the guessing. If he doesn’t guess the other team goes.
In an All Play you have all the teams drawing at the same time trying to guess quietly so the other teams don’t get their ideas. That’s almost impossible because you get really excited trying to be the first to guess what your teammate is drawing. Everyone at this time is drawing the same picture!
This game is so much fun. You may get angry at times at your partner because you are sure you drew an exact replica of an eyeglass lens, and why on earth couldn’t he tell! But it is all in fun and laughing about it is what will happen the most
I can’t recommend this game enough. Your family will love it. I have never known anyone who has not loved playing Pictionary.
