three_ster's Full Review: Milton Bradley Pictionary Junior
Pictionary is quite an interesting game. The whole premise behind it, is that you are partnered with someone, and you try to guess what the person is drawing. The game play is set up to be a 4-player game, and thus makes it not possible to get a fun game going with any less than that. The game though, is one of the more expensive ones on the market, and tends to be reserved mostly for adults. I learned how to play the game when I was about 15, when my parents decided to let me in on the game. Before that, they had played it with friends of the family. I think that they did not think that I would prove to be a fast enough thinker when it came to playing.
The Pictionary set comes with a board that is actually quite brightly colored. It has the color scheme, because along the path that the players have to take, there are different colors corresponding to the different categories in the game. The game also comes with four pencils, 4 pads of paper, and 60 second sand timer. Included are of course, the playing pieces, and 324 playing cards that are kept in a nice little box that makes them easy to slide out.
Each one of the cards has 5 different categories that correspond to the 5 different colored spaces that are on the playing board. They are split up in All Play, Object, Person-Place-Animal, Action, and Difficult. The All Play is where every team gets to try and play at the same time. Object is where you are asked to draw the thing that is asked for on the card. Action is for drawing something that is doing something: i.e. walking. Some of them are tough to draw, but none is as tough as the difficult category. In that one you are required to draw some things that will test your resolve in trying to do it. An example in this category would be "relative." Try drawing "relative" in 60 seconds.
The game starts with the team rolling the highest number going first. That team then goes as many spaces as in on the top of the die. If it is 5, then they go 5 spaces. They then are on a space that has a color that is on the card that is about to be drawn. One player will be the drawer, and the other player will then have 60 seconds to guess what their partner is trying to draw. If they guess it right, then they get to move on with another role. If they guess wrong, then it becomes the turn of the second team. One team could hypothetically win the game without even giving the second team a chance, but I have never seen this happen.
Usually my friends and I, will play best 2 out of 3 games of Pictionary. This is because everyone has a lucky game where they get all the easy things to draw, and this gives the other team a chance to redeem themselves. The thing to watch out for in this game though, is that it can get loud, and some people can get really stressed out about it. Sometimes you will run across a person who takes it too seriously, and they will get upset if their partner is not drawing good enough to suit them. This has happened to me before, and what I did was simply make sure that person understood that the game is just for fun :)
This is one of those games, that because of some of the subject matter, is more acquainted for adults to play. While everything is quite clean at the start, people might interpret their words in different manners though. This can lead to a lot of fun, and hysterical moments, as you try to figure out just what your partner is trying to draw for you. The game only has one small piece (the die), so it really could be played my younger children, but I believe there is still a game on the market called "Pictionary Jr." that they could try out instead.
