bballin2413's Full Review: Milton Bradley Pictionary Junior
Pictionary is definitely a great game in certain situations. The game is really fun, a great number of players can play, and when drawing the pictures you must think hard at what to draw. If you've never heard of this game, just continue and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Contents
You have a gameboard, one-minute timer, 500 word cards, die, 4 markers, 4 category cards, 4 pads of paper, and 4 pencils.
The Object of This Game
You must try to identify through sketched clues as many words as necessary to advance to the finish square, and correctly identify the final word. Sketches MAY NOT include letters numbers or number signals(#).
Getting Ready to Play
You place the timers and the card box so all players have access to them. Divide equally into teams of even numbers, up to 4 on each team and 16 total players(See number of players section). Provide each team with a pad, pencil, category card, and marker. Place the marker in the start square of the gameboard. Each team selects a picturist, one who will sketch clues for the first word. Roll the die to determine the order of play. The highest roller will start first.
To Play the Game
All markers rest in the P square to start, so the word in the P category is in play. The die is NOT rolled to advance at the start.
P---Person/Place/Animal(or related charactersitics)
O---Object(things that can be touched or seen)
A---Action(things that can be performed; events)
D---Difficult(challenging words)
AP--All Play(this can be any type of word)
All of the above letters are found on the board and also the category cards. These categories are where you will find the words you are supposed to sketch so your teammates must guess.
The starting picturist selects a word card from the front of the deck and ha five seconds to examine the word to be played. The timer is then turned on and the picturist begins sketching clues for the team. The picturist may not use verbal or physical communication to teammates during the round. Sketching and guessing continue until the word is identified or time is up. If a guess is correct, the team continues to play by rolling the die, advancing the number of squares that is shown on the die. They now select another card and and choose the word under the category of the square their marker landed on. Any number of markers may occupy the same square at the same time. The picturist position rotates after ever drawing
If a word is not identified in the time limit, the die is passed to the team at the left. Play continues as before. Remember that you do not roll the die until you identify the word on the square correctly. You must stay on the same square until your team identifies the word correctly.
All Play
In the All Play category, the word card is shown to the picturist of each team. The word is then sketched simultaneously by the picturists to his respective team. The first team to guess the word correctly gains control of the die and immediately rolls and continues play.
If no team wins the All Play and time runs out, then the die is passed to the left and play continues as normal.
To Win
A team must reach the final All Play square for a chance to win. The All Play rules apply and if the team on the All Play square correctly guesses, they win. If not, play continues as normal.
Number Of Players
The number of players per team may be uneven if an odd number of players wish to play. In the case of three players, two teams are formed. One person must act as the picturist for both teams. This person selects word cards and sketches throughout the entire game. The picturist may never vary. Normal game rules apply.
Play is quicker and more exciting when there are less teams, and more players per team. If more than 16 players wish to play create a 5th team.
What I Like About This Game
I like many things about this game. First off it is very fun. That is definitely the most important. I also like the fact that it is made so that a wide variety of players can play. The box says 3-16 players. That means it can be a family game, and it can be a party game. I like games that take thinking. In this game, you must think about many things while playing. First off, the drawer must think about what to draw, and second, the guessers must try and guess what the heck it is that the sketcher is sketching. Some of the words are very difficult to draw, so the guessing and drawing are usually the same difficulty.
When and Where to Play
This game can be a family game, and it can also be a party game. I would prefer this game for a party situation because games are always more fun with more people, especially friends. You can play this game at any time. It is just that fun. Rainy days, Sunny days, Beautiful days, it really doesn't matter.
Age Limits
This game is not for younger children! I set the age limit at 12+ and I believe the box agrees with me. There is another game called Junior Pictionary that is a lot more suitable for younger children.
Holdupability and Price
This game did fairly well with the holdupability test. I've had it for quite a while and the box is even in good condition. I don't know what they did to the box, but it surely is more sturdy. The only bad thing is that the minute timer(hourglass) broke. That is ok though. It is easy to use a regular oven timer anyway because it makes a beeping sound when time is up.
This game was horribly priced at like $22.00 when I bought it, but don't let that scare you away because it is great fun and if your throw many parties, then this will definitely be a good game for you.
