ziprz's Full Review: Milton Bradley Pictionary Junior
airplane?! fish?! submarine?! ok it has flippers...frog...time's up. "WHAT WERE YOU DRAWING?" "I was drawing a tadpole! If you guys had gotten the frog sooner, I would have led you back to the egg, and then in between was tadpole" Such are the stories my family members tell after going up to the board and "drawing" a squiggle, an arrow, and a circle with a black dot in it.
Pictionary is an absolute riot. More hysterical than anything is when a team fails to guess what the person is drawing, and the "artist" has to explain his or her squiggles. Equally enjoyable are rounds where the artist only has to draw a simple square and the team manages to get "capital building" out of it.
The concept of the game is very simple. Pick a card. Draw the word that has the same color as where your game piece is located. You get the the amount of time in a sand timer to draw the word. Your team guesses right, you roll the die and move forward. If you run out of time it is the other team's turn to draw. If the word has a triangle beside it, both teams guess. The first team to guess right gets to roll. This is basically how we play. We haven't read the rules in years, and have adjusted them to make it as interactive as possible.
My grandfather mounted a white board onto an easel so that we can all see the "masterpieces" better instead of drawing on the little pads that come with the game. I highly recommend this, or some other method of enlarging the drawing area.
2 recommendations. First, don't let anyone squirm out of drawing. I'm a graphic designer, and the worst at drawing of anyone in my family. Why? Well, I like to draw a rendered 3-D cube when all that was necessary was a stick figure. Second, please involve any kids that are around. We have a very easy time including 10-12 year olds into the game. Let them pick a new card if they don't know the word, or give them a hint at what they should draw. You will find that 12 year olds have a much more wide open mind than any of us "adults" There are also kids versions of Pictionary that you could use in conjunction with the adult version, or spin the kids off into their own game in the other room.
There are a few great games out there that I would consider a "staple" that everyone must have. Pictionary is one of them.
