fresita's Full Review: Mo Willems - The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog
If I were to try to describe a hot dog to a person who's never had one, "a taste sensation" would probably not be among my choice of expressions. I'd most likely reserve that description for something more worthy -- such as black licorice or horseradish mustard, for example. Perhaps if I dumped enough of the latter onto a hot dog I might concede a point or two to Mo Willems in "The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!"
Synopsis:
Mo Willems' now-famous Pigeon finds a hot dog. Just when he's ready to sink his teeth into its juicy goodness, a yellow duckling scoots up to ask how a hot dog tastes. At first Pigeon, glad to find someone interested in hearing about hot dogs, raves about this "celebration in a bun," until he finally realizes what the duckling is up to.
My Thoughts:
Perhaps by now Pigeon has realized he should have just eaten the hot dog, then come to Epinions to review it. Instead, he lets himself get caught trying to outwit a little duckling who knows how to use his cuteness to its full advantage.
"The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!" is part of a series of pigeon books by Mo Willems. My kids love anything with Pigeon in it, but so far this one is their favorite. They are constantly repeating Pigeon's exasperated expressions, such as Oh, for Pete's sake! and What am I supposed to do?
I'm always amazed that such simple illustrations can be so expressive. Both Pigeon and the duckling give their lines with such convincing gestures, they almost seem alive.
The story is told through conversation bubbles, so the text goes straight from one character to the other, without any narration in between. This makes the story especially fun to read aloud. I give one voice to Pigeon, while using a tiny, innocent voice for the duckling. It's never hard to know how a particular line should be read, since the expressions on the characters' faces make the intended tone obvious.
My favorite part is when Pigeon, realizing he's losing the battle, begins imitating the duckling while making mouthing motions with the tips of his wings, just like a person would make with his hands when complaining about another person's constant chattering.
I've read this book to my kids many times, but still they request it often. They laugh so loudly, I often have to pause because nobody can hear me above the laughter. It's also one of their favorite books to read by themselves. It's funny listening to them imitating the same voices and expressions I use.
If you are planning on buying just one of Mo Willems' pigeon books, but can't decide which to choose, I'd recommend this one.
