Pros:A pill splitter is easy, quick, and efficient to use.
The Bottom Line: The pill splitter is an excellent way to divide a pill in a clean, sharp manner with no waste of the medication.
When was the last time you had to swallow a pill that was too large? Or perhaps you only had to take half a pill? Cutting a pill down to size using a knife can be tricky and dangerous. The pill can crush, not to mention that your fingers might get in the way. The solution? A simply operated pill splitter does the trick without wasting any of the pill or exposing you to injury.

Design and Operation
The pill splitter is an oblong plastic container with a hinged top, allowing the cover to flip open. A small stainless steel blade is imbedded in the top. The bottom section has two compartments, one positioned higher than the other.
The upper compartment secures the pill when it is being cut. There is a V shaped piece of plastic in this section. The pill is pressed against the angle of the V to hold it in place. When the top is closed, the blade neatly and quickly cuts the pill in half.
The bottom compartment is designed to hold extra pills or parts of pills that have already been cut. When the top is closed, the blade does not come into contact with this compartment, as it sits lower than the other one.
The splitter can handle pills that range in size from the very small to one-half inch in diameter. Round shapes are easiest to cut, but Ive also used the tool to split oblong pills.
The blade cuts through the pill in a split (no pun intended) second. On smaller pills, no pressure is needed beyond simply closing the top of the splitter. Larger pills require only a slight amount of pressure.
The unit cuts cleanly, with little or no waste of the pill, unlike cutting with a knife. It cuts coated and uncoated pills with the same efficiency, ease, and speed. The splitter is safe to use, because fingers never go near the blade during the cutting process.
I use the pill splitter more for my pets medications than for mine. For example, Ingrid, one of my cats was recently diagnosed with slight hyperthyroidism. She has to take a small amount of medication twice a day. The pill is tiny, and she only gets one-half each time. Thank goodness for the pill splitter, because if I tried another method to split that little pill, it would crush. Fact of the matter is its easier to cut the pill than to get Ingrid to swallow it!
Another good use of pill splitter is to cut large pills in half if you have trouble swallowing them. I dont normally have trouble with this, but on one occasion, prior to surgery, I had to take several monster-sized antibiotic pills, and the pill-splitter came in handy.
Other Selling Points
The pill splitter is inexpensive, running no more than $3 in most drug stores. Its also available in the pharmacy sections of large retail outlets such as Wal-Mart.
One suggestion: because of the relatively low price, I would recommend buying one for each person in the household who might be on long-term maintenance medications. This prevents cross-contamination of the medications, unless you plan to wash the splitter after each pill use.
The pill splitter is so easy to use that it can be operated with one hand. Its also easy to maintain. Wash in soapy water and rinse. Its dishwasher safe as well.
Its a sturdy tool with normal use. Ive had mine for more than 5 years, and it still cuts as cleanly as the first day I used it. Its completely intact, and none of the plastic has cracked.
This is truly one of the most cost-effective and useful aids I have in my medicine cabinet.
