Pros: a cheap, easy way to make fun and festive cakes
Cons: not the healthiest thing in the world
I am a hobbyist baker, and 95 percent of the time I make homemade buttercream frosting for my cakes. However, I do sometimes find the need to buy store-bought icing, particularly when I have to whip up cupcakes for my sons’ school and I simply do not have the time to bake and decorate from scratch. That is where Pillsbury Chocolate Fudge Funfetti Frosting comes in. I know I can count on this product for a fun and tasty desert that takes mere minutes to make.
This frosting is ready to use right out of the package. You do not need to add any additional ingredients. In fact, you really do not even need to stir it. Just take a knife and start spreading the frosting on top of your cake or cupcakes. Each container of frosting contains enough to fully cover 24 cupcakes, an 8 by 13 cake, or two 9 inch rounds. You might even have frosting left over, depending on how generous you are when applying.
This frosting tastes delicious. It has a rich, chocolately taste and is very sweet. Personally, I have grown accustomed to homemade frostings that are slightly less sweet, but I do not know a child that would ever turn away this type of frosting. My husband loves it too. Whenever I have baked using Pillsbury Chocolate Fudge Funfetti Frosting, I have received nothing but complements.
But here is the best part: in addition to the tub of icing, there is a small package of confetti-style sprinkles that you can apply to your cake(s) after frosting. Simply cut open the package with a knife, and start applying. I use a spoon to make sure I evenly cover my cake or cupcakes with the sprinkles; I once made the mistake of shaking the opened package over my cupcakes and ended up with a mound of sprinkles on a few cupcakes and barely any on the remainder.
I love these sprinkles because they are very bright and festive. The colors include yellow, red, green, orange and blue. Because they are so bright, they show up well against the brown frosting. I also like the fact that they are round and they vary in size. They definitely have a different appearance than your typical sprinkles. They are perfect for turning a plain old cake into a birthday or other celebration cake, and they work equally as well for boys and for girls.
I also like the fact that you put the sprinkles on yourself, as opposed to having them pre-mixed into the icing. Better Crocker makes a product called Rainbow Chip, and while the taste is equally as good, the appearance is not nearly as nice. Their icing comes with the chips already in the icing. As far as I know, they only have vanilla (white) and other similar light colors (i.e. pink) as options because those chips would never show up against chocolate frosting. Even with the white frosting, since the frosting covers the chips, the otherwise bright chips end up being pale, muted colors that simply do not have the same effect.
A tub of this frosting will run you about $1.50 if you find it on sale, or about $2.00 otherwise. You can find it at most supermarkets; I know that all of the grocery stores close to me carry Pillsbury Chocolate Fudge Funfetti Frosting.
In terms of nutritional information, well, it’s frosting. I would not go and eat a tub of it in a sitting (something I am embarrassed to say I attempted as a child), but one serving on occasion is probably not the worst thing in the world. It contains a significant amount of ingredients, many of which are not natural or organic, but again, this is not something that should be a part of your daily diet so who cares.
