bntowen's Full Review: Pilot Pen 40 G2 Black 1.0mm Bold Pt. Retractable G...
At our managers meeting at the beginning of this fiscal year, we were informed that there would be no merit raises, cost of living wage increases, or even frozen turkeys for Christmas bonuses. Our Christmas bonus this year was...we keep our jobs. For that I am thankful. In addition to freezing positions lost to attrition, we cut costs by restricting travel, training, and cut office supplies. The first to go was pens. Employees cannot hoard the Bic-like Staples ballpoint pens. I am embarrassed for Staples when they charge people to actually use the paper-engraving ballpoints. To make the six people in my department happy after the holidays, I began shopping for pens to give as presents as described in my 2002 Pilot G2 0.7mm epinion. What I came across at Walmart was the Pilot G2 1.0mm retractable gel pen. My probation officer would agree that I'm a bold guy. A bold signature across my pre-trial release paperwork demands a bold man with a bold pen. The G2 1.0mm is bold, clean, and "flowy" (spell check overridden).
Edge to edge the lines laid down by the 1.0mm are clear without ragged edge. The flow-rate is substantial leading to the drawback of high drain on the ink supply. Curling cursive lines though bold have definition unless I'm writing in a tight spot like within the half-line of a check register. Fast, whipping motions spew continuous ink. I would add that the ink is seriously black with no red or green cast. Coloring in doodles during mind-blunting staff meetings was fountain-pen-like. I said like. Even with constant over-write, this ink doesn't readily bleed through. Drying enough to wipe a finger across without smearing takes slightly longer than the 0.7mm Pilot G2 Gel, but for the think water-based lines this puppy kicks out; it's a reasonable dry time. If you're crying while you're writing, it fills the page with water marked emotion sure to get men and women out of relationship trouble.
The barrel construction continues in the fine lineage of all the rest of the G2s. The not too bulbous clip continues to be an industry leader in anti-snap-off technology. I've frequently strayed to store brand G2 knock-offs or copies made by Pentel and Bic. Clip snappage or straight-out bendage runs rampant. The 1.0mm Pilot G2 clip is also rounded for clipping on delicate shirts and not so delicate portions of chest hair. Pull a non-rounded clip from the middle of a front-pocketless shirt, and the pain will make you wish you were water-boarded instead. Now for the click.
I've discussed pen click before, but I can't resist. Pilot has the firm-but-smooth-click-thing down. It clicks with the best of the pens costing ten times more. The interchangeable ink-sticks are wonderful, but unless online, I know of no office supply or big retailer who stocks the Pilot G2 1.0mm Gel Pen who also stocks the 2-stick refill pack like they do for the 0.7mm and 0.5mm. Also, the rubberized grip continues to have the balance between tacky and firm, and no matter how long I wrote, there was no residual rubber smell. The size of the barrel accomodates my meaty fingers and those of female coworkers that aren't...well...big-boned. And yes mom, it's good for men with nice personalities too.
Lastly, I recommend buying the pens in the bigger packs like 5, 10, 20, and 40 as the price appreciably drops from the 1 and 2-packs.
