Okay - I have been shopping for a HTIB for a few months now. We had an older shelf style stereo system which went kaput. We had already purchased a DVD/VCR combo unit, and I was playing my CD's on the DVD player thru the TV (not so great sound, as I am sure you can imagine!).
We decided to go with the HTIB for two reasons - one was for the price - they are quite comprable to buying a shelf stereo, with the same or better sound quality, and two was for the surround sound to go with our TV and DVD's. I was not wanting to spend more than $600.00. I didn't care if it had another DVD player or not - my only requirement was that it had a receiver so I could listen to the radio (bye, bye old cassette tapes!).
After extensive research (consumer reports.com, cnet.com, and this amazing site!) I narrowed my list to about 10 different systems. I won a gift cert to Best Buy, so I was limited to purchasing from there. After listening to all of my options in the store, I settled for this one. The clarity of sound was awesome, and I couldn't beat the price.
The things I liked about it were the fact that the speakers had two tweeters in them (double drive or something like that), and that the subwoofer had a separate volume control. We got it home, and spent more than 10 hours trying to hook it up, with no success. They had a 1-800 number to call, but we live in Alaska, and it was after hours. We needed to connect the DVD/VCR unit, our satellite TV reciever, and our older 27" TV, which has no S connections, just the three - red, white, and yellow. Not rocket science, but we had lots of problems. It seemed like there were two different instructions for hook up, and it was very confusing. Finally a neighbor came over to help, unplugged one wire, plugged it into another hole, and it worked!
We immediatley put in the Star Wars DVD, and it blew us away! We have had it hooked up for two weeks now, and have really enjoyed it. The different settings are fun to play with, and the sound is absolutely phoenomonal! We also had a party, and the house ROCKED! The music sounded just great - we could not have been more pleased. Bottom line - an awesome system for a great price!
