| tjodalv's Full Review: Pioneer DV-47A DVD Player |
I purchased the Pioneer based on 3 very favorable reviews I read in home theater magazines. But after I added a 73" Mitsubishi to my set up a strange artifact manifested itself making watching movies a lot less enjoyable. Some reds in the picture appeared to be overly saturated and blooming showing very noticeable scan lines in the affected areas. Right away I new there was something wrong with the machine, because I calibrated my TV before anything, so it wasn't the TV's decoder. I did some research later and found out that Pioneer has a chroma bug in their MPEG decoders. The flaw in the decoder is what causes the exaggerated reds, jagged edges, blocking and blooming. Surprisingly enough, not one review in any magazine mentions the problem with this DVD player. From what I've learned, all Pioneer DVD players suffer from the chroma bug, but regarding this particular machine - don't buy this Pioneer DVD player to watch movies in progressive. SACD and DVD-A... maybe... When there are titles to choose from. Another thing that some people won't like is the fact that the manual is poorly written and doesn't explain the benefits of all the numerous adjustments available to the end user. So, basically if you ever get in a tweaking mood, you'll be on your own, armed with whatever knowledge (or lack thereof) you have accumulated.
