| abones4477's Full Review: Pioneer VSX-D711 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Upon the demise of my 9 year old Pioneer we went on the hunt for a new receiver. After reading many reviews from different people and professionals we settled on the VSX D711 by Pioneer.
This unit has the majority of the latest bells and whistles including Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS and a fully integrated universal remote control. The styling of the unit is extremely clean with the majority of the features hidden under a panel, out of site of small little fingers.
With the 24 bit digital to analog conversion, it assists in getting almost true theater sound from both music cds and dvds. It provides 100 watts x 2 in stereo, and 100 watts x 5 in surround mode. Also, unlike comparable models at this price, it offers both pre-amp outs for a sub-woofer and a center speaker. The speaker connections can either be using just straight speaker wire or banana clips. Personally I prefer the banana clips as these are easy to use.
All settings can be done using the remote control, however I highly recommend you read the manual before attempting this. This was the only draw back I saw with this unit as the set-up using the remote was a bit difficult til you completely read the manual. There are great explanations in the manual however in terms of the usage of the cross over setting and also whether to use the large or small speaker settings. You have the ability to adjust the db rating for all speakers and the distance of all speakers. There is also a quick set-up so you can get started right away without having really read the manual. The sound quality won't be as good using this method.
The unit is DVD-Audio Ready and will handle 3 Digital inputs; 1 optical and 2 coaxial and has 1 digital out which is also optical. (A note for new users of optical connections. This is for sound, not picture). There are 8 inputs total, 4 audio and 4 audio/video which include inputs specifically for satellite users. For those individuals that prefer using S-video connections, there are 4 inputs and 2 outputs available also on this unit.
I have really enjoyed the sound quality of this unit when using it with DVD's and getting what I would consider good theater sound at home.
The msrp by Pioneer is $365.00, however I was able to pick this unit up, brand new in the box at Circuit City as a clearance item for $143.00.
I would recommend this unit to anyone interested in good home theater sound at a great price.
