Pros: Elegant, uniquely low-profile design. Higher power than VSX-C100 (50W vs. 30W/ch). Universal remote.
Cons: Lacks coaxial digital input (optical only). No multichannel analog input for DVD-A.
The Bottom Line: This receiver is not only unique in its compactness, it is easy to use, elegant, and performs well. Highly recommended.

| jizenka's Full Review: Pioneer VSX-C300 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I got this for my parents, who were new to the world of home theater. They did not want another large component on top of their TV set, so the compact size was ideal. It was perfect for their setup except that the color is silver and they have a black DVD player and VCR. (I have since discovered it is available in black in the U.K. and Europe. I wonder why they don't offer black in the U.S. also -- it would probably sell better.) My folks like it very much and, contrary to another opinion, it was very simple to set up.
My folks did not really want the 5.1-channel capability (what a pity!), just stereo. However, I could find no stereo receivers of a similar size. Also, this unit also offers virtual surround for 2 channels, which works well. Conversely, for those who have a multichannel speaker system, it also offers Dolby ProLogic II to simulates surround sound for stereo sources. It sounds powerful and punchy, and the FM tuner pulls in a very clean signal.
As far as I'm aware, there is really no competition for the two Pioneer ultraslim A/V receivers (VSX-100 or 300). The C100 has about half the power (25W/ch). Unfortunately, neither unit provides multichannel analog inputs required for SACD or DVD-Audio discs (not to be confused with the audio for DVDs, which works fine).
Like most users, my folks wanted clear sound, and this unit delivers. It is easy to use, unobtrusive, and performs well. Highly recommended.
