Avast Ye Scurvy Dog! Drop Them Cookies Before I Plunder Yer Booty

  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Durability:
Pros:Great for any pirate themed party, lots of detail, well made.
Cons:A little on the expensive side but more than worth it.
The Bottom Line: Why are cookie cutters listed in the Kids & Family section?

Anything pirate related is a hot commodity; toys, costumes, books, movies and yes, even cookie cutters. I have yet to see a set of cutters that have the amount of detail to them that the Foose collection has. Nine cutters with great shapes for about $14.00. While that might sound like a lot when you compare the prices to other metal cookie cutters, these are top of the line items that will last you years if you care for them properly. And how exactly do you care for metal cutters? Hand wash them so you know all the food bits are clear of the inside and cervices, allow them to air dry to that there is no chance of rusting and store them properly. I have small plastic cases that I keep them in; cut out some cardboard so you can layer them to save space. Whether you buy the cheap ones of the ultra expensive cutters, if you take care of them you will get more than your moneys worth from them.

Foose Pirate Party Cookie Cutter Set

As I mentioned in my review of the Foose Tinsmithing Company, the detail that their cookie cutters have is amazing. This set contains nine pirate themed cookie cutters in the following shapes: pirate flag, pirate ship, parrot, seashell, dagger / sword, pistol, palm tree, anchor and treasure chest. I wasn't sure what shape the treasure chest was until I checked the website; then I felt like slapping my head because it was sort of obvious once I put two and two together. These are strong and sturdy cutters that will hold their shape but you have to remember a few key things. Never use them to cut into dough that has chocolate chips, peanuts or anything hard in it because it will dent, ding, warp or bend the metal edge.

The photo shown here is incorrect and features the oversized castle cookie cutter which is not included with this set. The castle cutter sells for five dollars on it's own so obviously this photo is incorrect as well as the listing for it because Foose does not have a ten piece pirate themed cutter set. To see the castle cutter on its own, cut and paste this URL into your browser:

I've had the chance to use almost all of the shapes in this set and they are really great to work with. The parrot looked awesome with some red food dye added to the dough, the seashells were awesome with some pink and purple food dye then topped off with the opposite color of sugar sprinkle. The palm tree was the one that I really wanted to work with first because I had the perfect brown royal icing left over from another batch that I had just got done decorating. All of the shapes are hearty enough that you could use a royal icing on them but you will have to be careful on the staff of the flag pole, middle of the anchor, the entire dagger and the base of the palm tree. It usually works out best if you apply the royal icing with a squeeze bottle so you have more control.

You don't have to use these just for cookies. The larger ones are great for sandwiches and even if you want something silly for breakfast; press one of the cutters into a waffle or piece of bread then put it in the toaster. The image will come out darker than the rest of the item and that's something that will make even the pickiest of kids smile. If you want to use this with brownies, well, you are going to have to press out the shapes after it comes out of the oven but after it has had a chance to cool off a little. You might not get great looking brownies from these because there is a lot of detail to them. You can get the best shapes from using a solid sugar cookie recipe but if you don’t want to go through the work of making you own, you can use the refrigerated stuff you find in the grocery store.

The nine piece set has a suggested retail price of $13.95 and you can get it at the Foose website; I have no idea where these are sold locally but if you are in the Fleetwood area of Pennsylvania they do have a storefront that you can visit and see all of their awesome products. Is this set worth the price? I am a hard core cookie cutter fiend so I can be extremely rough when judging them but I have to say that this pirate themed set is more than worth the price. Some of the shapes will require some work when decorating but they are not impossible to do. The parrot, dagger and palm tree are my favorites but there isn’t a single one that I would axe from the set.

The Bottom Line

If you are planning a pirate themed birthday party and are looking for some cookie cutters to add to the festivities then this is the set for you. I like the fact that I can use the shapes in the set for other things. Annabelle loves the seashell and asks for pink and purple ones all the time and come on, how cool is it to have dagger shaped cookies? The pirate flag can easily be used for a patriotic holiday and I have a ton of ideas for the treasure chest cutter for Halloween. It will make the prefect large wide tombstone! Even if this set only got used a couple times a year, to me it was still worth it. Foose might cost a little more but to me it's more than worth it!

As always, thanks for the visit…
